Remember the POWs this Christmas

category national | miscellaneous | opinion/analysis author Monday December 11, 2006 19:31author by Saoirse - Ógra Shinn Féinauthor email osfnational at yahoo dot ie Report this post to the editors

Barry McNally

It is all to easy to get wound up in the festive cheer and hype in the run up to Christmas and while I do no advocate going ‘cold turkey’ (excuse the Pun) on Christmas altogether I do ask everyone as you sit around your table this Christmas spare a thought for republican prisoners who spend yet another Christmas away from home and loved ones.
freepows.jpg

In years gone by Christmas for republican POWs were a time of comradary, prisoners understood each other’s position. During the festive season candles would glow on windows throughout Ireland, in memory of the republican prisoners.

However 8 years on from the signing of the GFA agreement and over 10 years on from the IRA cessation the fact still remains that these men have to face Christmas in the bleak dark setting of a prison cell. The decision by the leadership of Óglaigh na hÉireann in July 2005 in calling an end to that phase of the armed conflict removed and precondition for IRA POWS to be held incarcerated. History has shown that the end of any military campaign heralds the release of political hostages, why so is this not the case in Ireland.

The Dublin government, in particular have yet to fulfil its part in releasing IRA POWS in Portlaoise and Castlerea. Other prisoners who face Christmas behind bars are our brothers, sisters, mothers, fathers, friends and comrades.

Ógra Shinn Fein have been campaigning, along with it other groups to ensure the men do not have to spend another Christmas away from home and loved ones.

This Christmas we will again highlight their plight by having protests and vigils in the west Tyrone area in the run up to Christmas to show our support to our republican comrades who face the dreadful task of facing Christmas away from home.

The onus is firmly on the London and Dublin Governments to ensure that these men are released so that they too can enjoy Christmas with friends and family.

Are you only talking about IRA Sinn Fein Prisoners?

the provo ogra statement was about prisoners aligned to the provos, i posted about the cabhair christmas swim, cabhair supports prisoners affiliated with the republican movement.

I saw this on yahoo newsgroup and its good to see that Republican prisoners still have support stateside:

Every Christmas morning a swim is held in Dublin, it is held to raise
funds for the dependants of Republican prisoners. They have a
bonfire, music playing, food, etc and many people come to watch and
take part. It's become a Christmas tradition for many Dublin
Republican families.

This year is also the swims 30th anniversary! On the IRBB (
http://admin2.7.forumer.com/index.php ) a member/poster on there
named "Kat" has started an open ended donation drive to help support
this worthy cause. It started when she pledged $20 USD for every
member of the IRBB who swam, other members have pledged to match her
donation and so far the ante is up to $140 USD per swimmer. After the
swim, those who has taken part will send on their donations to the
National Irish Freedom Committee ( www.irishfreedom.net ) , who raise
funds for Cabhair in America. If you are a member of the IRBB, even
if you have never posted before, when you get a chance read the thread
titled " CABHAIR Christmas swim -30 years underwater" and hopefully
you too will want to get involved in helping alleviate just some of
the finacial burden of prisoners families this holday season!

Cabhair - Irish Republican Prisoners Dependants Fund

Cabhair is a charitable organisation, solely dependant on public subscriptions. It was established in early 1987, following the revolutionary / reformist split in the republican movement, for "the relief of cases of distress arising out of republican activity".

Immediately followimg the Ard-Fheis of Sinn Féin in 1986 when the Provisionals departed from the Republican road a number of Irish political prisoners in England, the Six Counties and the 26 Counties adhered to the revolutionary path and refused to accept support from the Provisionals.

To meet this pressing need CABHAIR was formed and has continued with this noble work. Prisoners that they have cared for have been released on completion of sentence and others have gone to prison. At no time since 1987 have no prisoners been in CABHAIR's care. As long as British rule continues in Ireland, Irish people will resist that foreign occupation and, unfortunately, there will be political prisoners.

CABHAIR currently supports Republican prisoners in Portlaoise prison in the 26 Counties and Maghaberry prison in the Six Occupied Counties.

Hi all !

I posted information regarding the Christmas Swim in the 'Events' section of this site
(http://www.indymedia.ie/article/79923) and would just like to add that John , from the 'Weblog' mentioned below , has attended 29 such outings and will be present this December 25th for the 30th event .
It has in the past drawn crowds of about 200 people (from toddlers on their first trike out with their parents to pensioners who are no doubt fed-up with screaming grandkids in their house!) regardless of the weather , and , hopefully , will do so again this year !

If you are out walking in the area , do drop by - if you are driving past that particular canal bridge , sound your car horn in support !

Thank You ,

Sharon .

The Dublin and British governments do their best to convince the world that there are no political prisoners today in Irish or British jails. We, of course, know that that's not the case. Not only should we remember them but their families as well. What if we all wrote into our local newspapers on that topic? We know that to the mainstream press, there are no political prisoners! A few well placed letters to the editor could only increase awareness in the general population.
