Shell To Sea Picket On The Finglas Road (26/04/08)

category dublin | anti-capitalism | news report author Saturday April 26, 2008 14:08author by Nikita - CYM Report this post to the editors

This afternoon, activists gathered at the Shell station on the Finglas road for a picket called by the Connolly Youth Movement. Comrades from many different political backgrounds joined us in our support of the Rossport people and opposition to the dangerous pipeline being built in Mayo without the consent of the local community.
Business As Usual
Business As Usual

The picket started around 12pm and lasted for an hour until 1pm. Around 15 activists attended the action in good spirits and leaflets were distributed to the local community and to cars that were stopped at the traffic lights.

This station has been picketed successfully for the past 6 months and we'll continue to keep the pressure on them in the following months to come. This station and others like it are being converted into Topaz stations but the petrol they use is still coming from Shell and so the actions against them are still needed. We would urge all activists and groups to continue picketing other Shell stations around the country and to keep up the fight.

The Struggle Continues!

Just as we were leaving , after the protest was finished, the Special Branch showed up, with some uniformed support.

Now people who attend Rossport solidarity protests are well-used to being photographed, filmed, and otherwise recorded, and although we may not like it, there's not much we can do about it. However, it seems the gardaí feel that they shouldn't be subject to the same rules.

They seem to think that you need to ask someone's permission before taking their picture, even in a public place. Maybe that should perhaps be the law (although there might be problems with CCTV cameras if they have to get permisssion form everybody they film...) but the fact is that is isn't the law.

And losing you cool and grabbing the camera isn't really legal either...

hardly the shell to sea campaign any more. Locals want to move refinery but have dropped demand for shell to sea. New plan...new name required.

Tell you what Andrew- if Shell respond positively to the heartfelt suggestion by some local people (who are desperately worried about the prospect of a summer of compulsory acquisition orders, beatings, jailings, and all the rest), then we'll abandon the campaign.

If however, Shell ignore this suggestion like they have every other compromise that's ever been suggested to them, then we'll keep on protesting.

That video is brilliant, pure class!

author by Nikita - CYMpublication date Wed May 14, 2008 23:05author address author phone Report this post to the editors

After a sustained series of pickets of this Shell station by CYM and Shell To Sea comrades for the past 6 months, the managers have finally decided to pack it in and throw their lot in with Topaz.

As the photos show, it is currently being demolished and being converted in a Topaz station that while being a cosmetic change, will still be using Shell Oil.

The previous pickets were a success and drummed up a significant amount of support for the campaign in the local area, links to these are below:

Solidarity.
