It's been a wet winter and this is bad news for farmers, says Ben Pile. But with agricultural yields increasing sharply over recent decades, there's no reason to link it to climate change or start catostrophising about it.

Chris Packham has hit back at claims made on GB News that half the world's population could die under Net Zero. But that seems like a fair estimate of the catastrophic harm of deindustrialisation, says Chris Morrison.

Talk on Banning Cluster Bombs at the University of Limerick

category limerick | anti-war / imperialism | event notice author Friday May 02, 2008 18:57author by Margaret Report this post to the editors

Amnesty International in association with the UL Peace Society is hosting a public talk on banning Cluster Bombs at the University of Limerick on Wednesday 7th May at 3pm in room C0070.

This event is part of a nationwide tour organized by the Cluster Munitions Coalition Ireland (CMC). The coalition is a group of Irish non-governmental organizations working to achieve a new international treaty to ban cluster munitions by the end of 2008. Irish Citizens have a unique opportunity to influence this process as the Department of Foreign Affairs is hosting ‘The Dublin Diplomatic Conference on Cluster Munitions’. This major international conference will take place in Croke Park on the 19th – 30th of May. More than 100 countries are expected to attend and to participate in a Cluster Munitions treaty negotiation.

This talk precedes a photo exhibition and talk on Cluster Bombs in Galway on May 8th http://www.indymedia.ie/article/87405

Who is speaking?
John Rodsted and Mette Eliseussen have spent many years working in countries affected by cluster bombs and landmines. They have a very intimate and first hand knowledge of the issue from both a field and diplomatic perspective. John and Mette are members of The Ban Bus, a grass roots advocacy project that is touring Ireland in May to raise public awareness about the global catastrophe of cluster bombs.

John Rodsted is an Australian photojournalist who has worked in most of the world’s war torn countries over the past 20 years. He brings great depth of understanding of all facets of the issue from military utility to development and the diplomatic solution. He is a key member of the International Campaign to Ban Landmines and part of the team that won the 1997 Nobel Peace Prize. He is also a co founder of the Cluster Munitions Coalition.

Mette Eliseussen is a Norwegian who spent many years working in Afghanistan, West Sahara and other developing nations. She is a sociologist who developed some of the first ‘Risk Education Programs’ in Afghanistan and the recipient of the ‘Barn Av Jorden’ prize for work with children in developing countries.
