Exploring the Israel / Palestine conflict in the NI context The Causeway project will bring together 4 groups of young people from the ROI, NI and Israel. The latter group are representative of both the Israeli Jewish community and the Palestinian community in Israel. All the young people involved are working, volunteering or active in peace building organisations connected to the conflict in Israel and the Occupied Territories. The participants have considerable experience in the various strands of this peace building work – peace organisations, NGOs, cross-community work, youth work, human advocacy work, dialogue work, etc… Those participants from the ROI and Northern Ireland, have a good working knowledge of the conflict in Israel / Palestine as well as practical experience in these various fields. The origin of the project lies in the ever-increasing need for those in the peace-building sector in Israel to evaluate their practices, learn from the practical examples of Northern Ireland, and to connect with others working in the same field. There is a feeling among those working for peace in Israel, that motivation, vision and clarity of purpose are lacking as the obstacles and political direction in Israel become increasingly difficult to tackle, and the activist / peace building communities lack focus, energy and support. The project hopes to address the need within this community of peace builders for learning, sharing of ideas and practices, reflection on past experiences and a need for long-term planning. Prior to this, many actions of the peace builders in Israel have been carried out on a reactionary basis in response to Israeli government actions, or specific events. There is a need for long-term strategic planning if a peaceful reconciliation and management of the conflict is to come about. |

Jump To Comment: 1 2 3 4The Israelis don't recognise Palestinians living with Israel's border as Palestinians but as "Israeli Arabs" (or "Arab Israelis"). Similar to the Orange State's rejection of all things Irish, the Israelis won't even recognise the national identity of the most oppressed section of the population of the Zionist state. You think you can build peace from this?
That's fine. The Palestinians don't even recognize the right of Israel to exist. Can you build peace with that?
Ignoring the fact that most Palestinians currently accept a two-state solution, in the end the existence of the Israeli state is a barrier to peace and justice. It's a racist, expansionist settler state. The only hope for the region is a single state where Palestinian refugees are guaranteed the right of return. And there's enough land in Palestine to house them all, but of course then Zionist rule would be impossible and we just can't have that, can we? Israel is too important as a (highly-subsidized) US satellite state to let a bunch of Arabs run the show.
Surely the region without any Jews would be peaceful, ain't it? I'm very sorry, but the basics of peace-making are accepting the basic rights of the other side. Since you seem to agree that it would be much better without Israel, I understand your concernt is not peace but the only wellfare of Palestinians, so there's no difference between you and some Christian pro-Zionist from the States. Both of you are not really objective, and both of you are an obstacle to Peace.
And about majority of Palestinians, you are quite wrong. Take a look into whom was elected in Gaza, and take another look in their schoolbooks.
Buy the way, when my grandparents left Europe, all the walls were covered with graffities "Jews, go to Palestine!" Strange how too many walls are now covered with "Jews, get out of Palestine!"
