UN Resolution Hijacked By US, UK And France

category international | anti-war / imperialism | news report author Friday January 09, 2009 09:11author by Miriam Report this post to the editors

Libyan draft summarily dismissed by the big three

Al Jazeera English have been reporting from the UN throughout the night about how the UN Resolution was adopted and how its terms are a capitulation to all of Israel's demands.

Described as a 'humiliation' for Hamas and the Gazans, the UN Resoution was forced through in highly unusual circumstances. Ghida Fakhry of AJ English was reporting throughout the night from the UN and describing how Arab delegates are extremely angry at what has happened to the UN Resolution. The original draft proposal by Libya was unilaterally hijacked by the US, UK and France and basic terms such as a call for an immediate end to the blockade of Gaza was stripped from the Libyan text along with other vital conditions. All contires had been asked to consider the Libyan draft for 24 hours when it was first put forward and when the delegates came back to the table they were confronted with an entirely new text drawn up by the US/UK and France and the Libyan one was dismissed. This is apparently highly unusual. She said the resolution is utterly humiliating for Hamas and the Gazans and that behind the scenes, the feeling among Arab delgates is one of anger and frustration. Bascially the triumvirate of powerful countries has railroaded a resolution which gives Israel everything it wants - 'the wording is so vague' Fakhry said. The resolution also does not specify to where the Israelis should withdraw so that there is every possibility that they will stay within the Strip. Marwan Bishra - AJ's Senior Political Analyst said, essentially, that Israel has been given carte blance. He pointed out that with no foreign observers in the Strip it was now entirely down to Israel to decide how things should proceed, and to say whether there had been a genuine ceasefire or not. The feeling among the analysts was that Israel had been given all the time it wanted to complete its plans and to determine how, when and to where they would withdraw - if at all. Commentators also observed that the protracted nature of the talks leading up to the resolution was in itself an attempt to buy Israel time to get the job done.

They also dismissed the so called 'UN call for an end to the ceasefire' which they said, if you look at the wording does not actually say what is being widely reported. UK. France and the US have said that they would support a call but are not actually calling for one right now, theirfore reports in the mainstream media that the call 'is being ignored' are incorrect.

(Sigh...wish we had somebody more like him here. Our lot are such snivelling corrupt cowards.)

I am sick of the language being used by many parties to let israel off the hook. everyone seems to be describing this as a "war" but clearly this is not a "war" at all. As bill hicks memorably said, "A war is when there are TWO armies fighting"

I stayed up to watch the passing of the resolution and I nearly puked at the snivelling watered down statements of some (but not all!) of the sycophantic UN officials and condeleeza rice's disgusting abstention speech

Among other points, condeleeza rice and others make is that hamas must stop the smuggling of weapons into the gaza strip. Its ok for Israel to harbour 200 nukes and loads of hi tech weaponry to wage wars willly nilly whenever elections loom but heaven forbid the opressed palestinians might have the means to defend themselves from their illegal occupiers when they are brutally assaulted, or have a decent bargaining position. Currently all they have are rocks and a few ineffective home made rockets.

And also this is a bit rich when it turns out the US is currently in the process of sending yet another ship full of arms to Israel in the middle of all this death. No kidding folks, you couldn't make it up!!
http://www.alertnet.org/thenews/newsdesk/N09303764.htm
Nice lucrative trade if you can get it.

And here's the israeli paper reporting this
http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/spages/1054236.html
Ironically Even that is better than the US mainstream media!!!

Yeah, I can just imagine some of the US thinking here: "let them use up all their expensive hi-tech weapons blowing up palestinians then they will need to get more from us, which will justify some of our huge military budget and help out our fat military industrial complex in these troubled times and justify those nice election contributions" Sometimes the outright cynicism of the world makes me sick.

Anyway, what is suddenly so wrong with a people defending themselves against an aggressive attack? Every second speaker on TV is saying "Israel has a right to defend themselves" Yet how come it's not the same for the palestinians? Such blatant hypocrisy!! It seems Israel think it's not fair if the people they are slaughtering can fight back. The true mark of a bully.

I almost wish an equally powerful arms selling nation like russia would park an aircraft carrier off the coast of gaza and deliver a large consignment of "aid" to the palestinians. I'm pretty sure that would have the required effect!!
It certainly looks like the neutered partisan talk shop of the UN aren't going to do any good. At least someone should level the playing field and give the palestinians something to bargain with. Looks like the only thing that will stop this at this slaughter at this stage is an increase in israeli casualties which could potentially have some political fallout in the upcoming israelli elections. The only way that can happen is if the palestinians can hit a few F16's or tanks and increase the casualties. For that they need a few sophisticated missiles. Harsh but probably a fact. Currrently their no doubt spirited resistance has been ineffectual as they are well out of their league and poorly armed.

I don't want anyone to die but I really hate seeing a murdering bully with all the latest state of the art american hi tech murder gear ride roughshod over a bunch of poor brown people armed with rocks yet again; for what, 15 days straight now is it?, while the rich overpaid fat officials charged with doing something about this do fuck all but jet around the place, talk about it and wring their well paid hands and knowingly buy time for the slaughter to continue. It's happened just too often. Sometimes when talking has failed, there is little recourse but to fight back. They should at least be allowed to defend themselves properly. Make the bully think twice before committing that atrocity. Talking doesn't seem to work with israel.

None of this could have happened without the unconditional support of the US. And that obama guy. Yeah everybody loves him so much. Think he'll really change much when he gets in? The signs aren't good are they? He'll comment on the Mumbai massacre but suddenly when asked about the murder of palestinians, it's "inappropriate" Likeable nice smooth talker but mark my words, you'll be waiting a while to see anything change much.
US policies in the middle east are just a continuation of the policies they have been pursuing for the last 40 years. Check this out if you haven't seen it already:
http://www.flagrancy.net/timeline.html

Alas, just the puppet in command changes. Intern humping sax playing charsmatic puppet, Nasty ignorant coke snorting cowboy puppet, soft spoken african american corporate owned puppet. Sure the puppets change and it's good theatre for the serfs but the hand up the puppets arse doesn't change.

My heart really goes out to those poor long suffering people in Gaza.
And I'm ashamed that my government does not have the balls to expel the israeli ambassador.

Eslewhere ,Alex Thomson of Channel 4 yesterday skewered the Israeli Prime Minsiters's spokesperson about Israel's treatment of the Red Cross workers. RC workers were forced to abandon their ambulances by Israeli soldiers and had to take a donkey cart one mile to where they found starving children laying beside their dead mothers and other injured people. All had to be removed on the cart.
