Saturday 17th January -- Boycott Israel Day

category dublin | anti-war / imperialism | event notice author Sunday January 11, 2009 20:47author by Boycott Israel Report this post to the editors

SATURDAY 17th JANUARY -- BOYCOTT ISRAEL DAY (DUBLIN)

The slaughter in Gaza - with more than 850 women, men and children dead and many more injured - has shown up the brutal and racist nature of the state of Israel. Just like apartheid regimes in the past, Israel has instigated such terror and injustice that it must be isolated internationally. A mass campaign to boycott Israeli goods can make the point forcefully and allow everyone to participate.

ON SATURDAY JANUARY 17th a collective boycott of Israeli goods in supermarkets in Dublin city centre will take place. Israeli goods sold in Irish supermarkets are herbs, fruits (such as Jaffa oranges) avocadoes , new potatoes, dried fruits - they are easily recognizable because they are marked 'Product of Israel' on the shelves.

RALLY AT 2pm AT THE CENTRAL BANK after which city-centre supermarkets which stock Israeli goods will be visited and the boycott of Israeli goods publicized.

''Boycott of Israeli goods, campaign meeting - to prepare the campaign and get your suggestions as to how to make it effective will take place on WEDNESDAY 14th JAN AT 6.00pm in the Abbey room, in Wynns Hotel in Abbey St. Everyone welcome.

Is there an actual detailed list of Israeli products sold in Ireland to boycott and also a list of which shops stock these products. Would be greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately the list is literally endless. My suggestion to people is to check the label for origin or ask the manager. Otherwise its Dunnes, Superquinn, Marks & Sparks, Atlantic homecare.... you name it

...... Come to think of it. There will probably be a list distributed on Saturday.

Israeli barcodes begin with 729.

From www.bdsmovement.net

1. Don't buy Israeli goods
This is easier than it sounds and a list of common products from Israeli companies can be found on a series of websites listed in the Resource section. You could also send a letter to the supermarket, the media and local political parties in your country informing them of your decision and the reasons.

2. Identify and lobby retail outlets that stock Israeli goods: Outlets that stock Israeli goods can be lobbied to break off such business relations in response to Israeli policies. You can send letters to local shops and large retailers asking them to de-shelve Israeli products. Find organizations and networks that would be willing to endorse the letter in order to achieve a more powerful effect.

3. Boycott and picket outlets that do not respond to lobbying
Where outlets continue to sell Israeli goods, go a step further and write informing them that you will no longer shop there. Organize a picket of the shop and distribute campaign materials informing people of the BDS campaign.

4. Set up a local campaign and website promoting the boycott
Spread the word about the BDS campaign. Useful material, fact sheets and resources can be taken straight from the BDS website for you to set up your own local campaign. You could also provide a blacklist of outlets in the local area that are refusing to stop selling Israeli goods.

5. Further steps
Organise pickets and blockades of the transportation of Israeli produce; Encourage shop workers, dockworkers and others to refuse to handle Israeli goods; Putting out public information about companies' use of Israeli technology and components; Create a Buycott alternative, promoting ethical alternatives to Israeli goods and reward companies who publicly distance themselves from the Israeli economy with greater levels of trade.

I hope that the people calling for the boycott of Israeli goods are not using their computers. Computers, cell phones and many many more have parts developed in Israel and/or made there. I wonder if these people are also wiling to forgoe life saving medical technology.
Oh, dear - you mean I shouldn't use my computer or my cell phone and if I am ill - what will I do then.
Good luck to you, is all I can say.

Boycott all Nestle products also. It is the widest selection of targets concentrated in one place.

What would you expect Brian Cowen to do if Terrorists fired 8000 rockets at Ireland throughout the last number of years.

Many people have exposed the lie about who broke the ceasefire, which is why the IDF are so desperate to keep repeating lies, on blogs, on YouTube, and the mainstream lazy press.
Thankfully, there are honest brave Israeli jews who are willing to stand up and point out these lies.

Avi Shlaim puts it like this.
He monitored the number of rockets, and when the ceasefire came into effect, Hamas stopped firing their own, and curtailed firing by others in Gaza. The average number of rockets prior to the ceasefire was 179 per month.
During the ceasefire, it was 3 per month.
Mr. Shlaim says that the IDF broke the ceasefire, in November and then the Israeli govt changed the figures on it's website to make it less clear that Hamas rocket fire had decreased.

He correctly condemns Hamas for firing rockets at populated areas, calling that terrorism, and correctly condemns the IDF for doing the same thing with more lethal weapons.

Read more at the link, and ignore those who would repeat lies.

Also, read up on the use of White Phosphorous in Gaza. Its use as a weapon is banned under the 1980 Geneva Convention, yet is is being used against a densely populated area, in a way where it is impossible for it not to be a weapon of war. That is a horrific war crime.

I for one will buy any Israeli products I want on Saturday. Arabs will hurt aswell if these products are boycotted.

I see the point, but I don't see the point.
A few of us deciding to not buy avocados this week isn't exactly going to cripple the Isreali war machine, this is the state that stated that the majority of the world was behind them even as the majority of the world's elected officials tried in vain to stop them.
We want to stop the violence, all of the violence; but we can't and we won't. We can't just keep on living in one shade or another; whether it's the liberal 'evil isreal' motif or the belief that all palestinians are terrorists.
But that's what we're taught to do, pick a side. They're all a bunch of childish wankers and I'm not playing any more.

By boycotting Israeli products, you hurt Palestinian jobs as many of them work in Israeli companies. Arab Israelis can and do have good jobs in Israel - doctors, teachers, scientists, even members in the Knesset (10 Arab members).

Just as the situation in israel affects the daily lives of Palestinians, it also affects the daily lives of Jewish and Arab Israelis. They do not know when the next suicide bomber will strike, and many of their jobs are also gone because of the violence.

Try caring for jobs on all sides instead of a blanket boycott of Israel which would mean throwing out your computer, mobile phone, and many medical advances aswell. Try telling a sufferer of M.S. that they cannot have a medical development because it comes Israel and see what answer you get.

If there was a concerted effort to boycott Palestinian fruit and veg, i would. A boycott of Israeli goods is collective punishment, something that we all agree is a bad thing. Two wrongs don't make a right. Support Israeli workers. Socialism now.

Israeli Basket ball team discovers that Sport does not transcend politics or murder.

Angry fans in Turkey make it clear that the Boycott has been extended to new fronts.

http://www.ynetnews.com/articles/0,7340,L-3651926,00.html

" The Israeli players were forced to flee to the locker room and hid there as police warded off the rioting crowd.
The fans chanted "God is Great" and "Killer Israel." At least one fan threw his shoe at Israeli players but police used riot shields to protect them as they left the court. The Turkish players also headed to the locker room.
A pro-Islamic group earlier set an Israeli flag on fire outside the arena. "
