category national | anti-capitalism | press release author Thursday September 02, 2010 10:25author by fromtheother99%author email 1percentnetwork at gmail dot com Report this post to the editors

Did you know that just 1% of the population are estimated to own at least 34% of the wealth of the country? The 1% network is a coalition of groups opposed to this inequality.
1percentrich.jpg

We have all heard of the ‘golden circle’. We all know that there is one law for the rich and another law for the rest of us.

The 1% network is a coalition of socialist groups which has come together to oppose the cutback agenda of the government and to promote a socialist alternative to the current socio-economic system. The name of the coalition was chosen to highlight the fact that just 1% of the population control in excess of 34% of the wealth of the nation. Organisations within the coalition include:

  • éirígí
  • Irish Socialist Network
  • Revolutionary Anarcha-Feminist Group
  • Seomra Spraoi
  • Workers Solidarity Movement

We are planning a number of events including a walking tour of the houses, secret meeting places and private banks where the 1% are to be found.

Join our Facebook group at http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=143661105666744 to receive notification of future events, we will have our own website up early next week.

More of that. Reminds me of a Scottish theatre company from way back went by the title of 7/84, because they had calculated that 7% of their population controlled 84% of the wealth.
Suggestion. Drop the term 'socialist'. Too many connotations for the general public's digestion.
Just call it a saner alternative to the gamblers' management we are handicapped with. Or a more rational system than the current anarchy of global speculators.
Socialism is a word spooks a lot of Irish conservatives(i.e. most of the population) who might listen to arguments if they were less ideologically framed; given that the evidence is in that we are up the creek for the foreseeable.
Say socialism, they hear communism(godless, dont you know), Stalin, Mao, Mugabe etc.,and all points dictatorial in a declining spiral.
I dont believe in sugaring necessary medicine. But no sense in meeting their prejudices half-way. If nothing else you give the mediacrocy a stick to beat you with, and raise smoke to fil their legendary 'column inches'. Then, if THEY ask are you not socialist, you can ask THEM what they understand by the hackneyed and abused term.
Just a thought.
