national / miscellaneous / press release Wednesday November 15, 2006 14:22 by National Secretary   text 23 comments (last - tuesday february 13, 2007 16:58)
The workers Solidarity Movement held its Autumn 2006 National conference in Seomra Spraoi, a social centre in Dublin. The conference saw around two thirds of the membership attending with greetings sent from our comrades involved in the struggle in Rossport.
National Conference opens with questioning the reports given by various office holders, editorial committees etc. A summary of these reports follows - quite a lot of details and indeed areas involving relationships with other groups have been removed, as these were not written for public consumption. read full story / add a comment

A Cork –based Dairy farmer has admitted that animals are routinely beaten by farmers in an Irish Times article written by Agriculture Correspondent Sean Mac Connell on Tuesday last.10-11-06. This revelation of cruelty was made whilst referring to a German made immobiliser system which he uses, he said’

‘I am a dairy farmer and I treat my animals well. In fact this machine will prevent animals being beaten when they are being trained to be milked’

Mr Hayes said many farmers had responded to the advert, which he placed in the Farmers Journal seeking agents to sell these devices.

The Shell to Sea campaign condemns the ongoing co-ordinated campaign to de-legitimise and criminalise local opposition to Shell’s project in Mayo. On last Friday, Gardai employed excessive violence against peaceful deminstrators causing scores of injuries and a number of hospitalisations. Government Ministers and the leader of Fine Gael have deliberately sought to create the impression that the campaign is orchestrated by sinister ‘outside’ forces. Sections of the media continue to propagate false and outrageous accusations. read full story / add a comment

Ballymoney Sinn Féin Councillor Daithí McKay has said that the EU must make the upholding of human rights and democracy for the Kurdish people a pre-condition of Turkish admittance to the European Union. Speaking after completing a 4-day tour of Turkish Kurdistan representing Ógra Shinn Féin Councillor McKay said:

"Turkey's treatment of the Kurdish people has been totally abhorrent and it's efforts to deny this sizeable minority their human rights has been plain to see. After one of the public debates I took part in Diyarbakir this week a number of international speakers, including myself, had our passports seized and photocopied by the police. This was just one example of how Turkey's Article 301 is used to threaten citizens for engaging in free speech criticising the government. Another example was when we were warned not to say the word 'Kurdistan' during a radio interview as the Government would have the radio station shut down.

Press Release

Issued by Irish Forestry Contractors’ Association (IFCA)

The importing of a boat load of wood pulp from Scotland via Waterford Port on the week ending Saturday 23rd, October, 2006 by Coillte has caused consternation among members of the Irish Forestry Contractors’ Association. The wood pulp was imported by Coillte for use in the production of OSB board timber product in its timber mill in Belview, Waterford. IFCA is a stakeholder in the Irish forestry sector and it was not consulted prior to the making of the decision to import the boat load of wood pulp in Waterford Port. IFCA is concerned about the prospects of contamination of native Irish timber products, which is a distinct possibility as a consequence of importing wood pulp. read full story / add a comment

The Executive of my Union, the Civil & Public Service Union (CPSU), at their Monthly Meeting held today, Thursday, November 2nd has fully backed the nurses' rally on 22nd November and are calling on all their members to support this protest. The CPSU will be issuing a Circular to all members in the next few days calling on all CPSU members to take part in the nurses’ protest. However, great as it is that the CPSU are mobilising all their members to support the nurses’ rally on November 22nd, we really need to get the rest of the Trade Union leaders up off their backsides. Now that the CPSU Executive will be officially supporting the nurses’ rally on 22nd November, this will put further pressure on the Executive of the Dublin Council of Trade Unions (DCTU) to officially support the nurses’ rally, and to organise a mass mobilisation of workers, similar to, if not bigger than the Irish Ferries ‘Day of Protest’ last December, and they will get the numbers as health is an emotive issue for many people! read full story / add a comment
