Ógra Shinn Féin last weekend claimed back Omagh British army base by erecting an Irish national flag at the front entrance to the base. The action was part of a demilitarisation protest held at the base as a part of an Ógra Shinn Fein national demilitarisation protest.

Young people from throughout the 32 counties of Ireland and representatives from the troops of movement, the Wolfe Tone society and the SLP also travelled from England for the weekend. It was the fifth annual demilitarisation protest and according to Ógra chairperson in west Tyrone, Barry McNally was held to ‘Claim Victory on the issue of British demilitarisation’ in the county Tyrone Town.

ANTI-WAR IRELAND WELCOMES REMARKS BY BRITISH ARMY CHIEF OF STAFF

Anti-War Ireland, a national anti-war organisation, welcomes the comments made today in the Daily Mail and on the BBC by British Army Chief of Staff, General Sir Richard Dannett, where he criticised the British military presence in Iraq and urged that Britian should "get ourselves out sometime soon because our presence exacerbates the security problems."

General Dannett's remarks reflect the depth of anti-war sentiment in Britain and across Europe and stand as a remarkable indictment of Blair's war policy by the most senior general in the British army. read full story / add a comment

Over the last two weeks the Shell to Sea campaign has been subjected to a coordinated assault designed to de-legitimise and criminalise local opposition to Shell’s project in Mayo. On the one hand, a large force of Gardai has been deployed to facilitate Shell’s resumption of work.

Garda policing of local protests has become increasingly aggressive and is adding to tensions on the ground. Numerous incidents have been logged by monitors and will be pursued in due course. On the other hand, a concerted campaign has been waged by some sections of the media alleging
that our campaign is centred on intimidation and effectively run by
subversive elements. read full story / add a comment

It has been confirmed that among the speakers at the Anti-War Ireland (AWI) demonstration at Shannon on Saturday, 28 October, will be three US Iraq War veterans, all of whom served together as interrogators at the infamous Abu-Ghraib prison. The three - who were in the same military battalion - have since completely rejected the war and are members of Iraq Veterans Against the War.

Tony Lagouranis, Joshua Casteel and Stephen Lewis are travelling to Ireland especially for the Shannon demo on 28th October, but will also speak at AWI public meetings both north and south.

For information on Tony Lagouranis, a recent interview can be found at the following link:
