"Do not listen to those who say there is nothing you can do to the very real and large social and environmental issues of our time. A life of activism gives hope, which is a moral imperative in this work and in this world. You meet the nicest people, you help transform ideas and systems, and you commit yourself to leaving the earth in at least as whole a condition as you inherited it." -Maude Barlow, national chairperson of the Council of Canadians, addressing Trent University in June 2009 after being awarded an honorary doctorate of laws. Maude Barlow will be one of the speakers

This meeting is an opportunity for trade unionists and all those concerned with democracy to learn exactly how CETA will damage our society and how we can all work together to apply pressure on our representatives in the EU Parliament to vote No to CETA read full story / add a comment

All welcome to our Financial Transaction Tax Working group meeting on Wednesday 11th November, 9.30 am

Banks, hedge funds and the rest of the financial sector should pay their fair share to clear up the mess they helped create.

The Financial Transaction Tax is a tax on banks that would give billions to tackle poverty and climate change - in Europe and abroad. It would be applied to trading in bonds, shares and derivatives. The European Commission is proposing a tax of 0.1% on trading in bonds and shares and 0.01% on trading in derivatives. Eleven Member States are working to implement this tax under the EU ‘enhanced cooperation procedure’. France, Greece, Spain, Portugal and Germany are among them but Ireland and Britain have stood outside the group. Michael Noonan is saying no to its introduction

DUBLIN FILM QLUB SEASON SIX:

FUNCTIONAL FAMILIES

......................................................................................................................

LGBTQ people have been defining 'family' in alternative ways since the beginning of human history. Circles of caring friends, mentors into gay culture, support groups, social networks, organically grown mixtures of biological and vocational relatives... LGBTQ people thrive in the mutually-supportive families
they enrich and build. It is time we celebrate our imaginative, courageous, loving families. Our functional families.

This is a repost of an article from the WSM. In a further confirmation of the empty nature of electoral democracy its been revealed that the Dublin City Council manager wrote to the company building the controversial Poolbeg incinerator to assure them they could ignore the two city council votes against the project. This after a special meeting when 50 out of 52 councillors voted against the proposal! read full story / add a comment
