Dr Kathleen Thomas was working at Médecins Sans Frontières' emergency trauma hospital in Afghanistan, when a series of devastating airstrikes struck the hospital - killing 42 staff, patients and their caretakers. The majority of the hospital was completely destroyed, with just one young patient surviving the attack on the intensive care unit.

**Family evicted from Dublin's Regency Hotel win offer of more secure alternative accommodation , 20 hour long picket of Regency Hotel by family and supporters ended.**

The Irish Housing Network has ended their protest outside the Regency Hotel in Dublin following the success of the family in securing alternative accommodation. The Network believes that the success of the family in securing safe alternative accommodation is thanks to the family’s persistence and courage in seeking decent accommodation for their family, and the response and level of solidarity shown by members of the public, the north Dublin community and housing groups across the city. These forces stood together in solidarity, putting significant pressure on the homeless services to provide the support previously denied to the family. read full story / add a comment

Following over a decade of left-leaning governments, the past 6 months have witnessed radical changes in the political status quo in Latin America. Beginning with the election of Right-candidate Mauricio Macri in Argentina, through the controversial removal of Dilma Rousseff in Brazil, to the upheaval in Venezuela and uncertainty in Ecuador, many are speculating that the era of leftist hegemony is coming to an end, and that rightist dominance is returning. This panel of scholars will reflect on the achievements and errors of the Left-wing governments, assess the challenges facing the Left across the region, particularly that emanating from the regional Right, and offer analysis of the Left's future as a social and political force. read full story / add a comment

On the afternoon of June 8th 2016 in Dublin there will be a briefing on CapGlobalCarbon. CapGlobalCarbon is a proposal for non-governmental actors to create a new global system to

(a) make sure the necessary reductions in total global carbon emissions are achieved
(b) reduce emissions in a way that also reduces poverty and inequality.

The system would operate as a back-up to the inter-governmental negotiations and provide vital reinforcement to community-led climate initiatives worldwide.

The purpose of this afternoon is to brief attendees on the proposal, set it in a context of the commons and social justice, and to generate ideas about how to implement CapGlobalCarbon. read full story / add a comment

On Thursday evening 2nd June 2016 I attended a meeting in St. Augustine’s school in Blackrock where parents expressed outrage at the withdrawal of the Saint John of God Community Services Supports on a phased basis commencing in September 2016. The school was described as a “centre of excellence” for its vocational programme which has had a very positive impact on the lives of many children with special needs in South Dublin, Wicklow and surrounding areas. read full story / add a comment

The idea of this meeting is to inform people of the secretly negotiated TTIP agreement between the USA and Europe. It is open to all.

We hope to be able to help launch an automonous local Anti TTIP group that can work with unions, political groupings and others to defeat TTIP, by being separate from but co-operative with others. This model has worked with the Water Charges Movement in the area and we hope it can be as strong on TTIP. read full story / add a comment
