GARDAI HAVE arrested a further 12 anti-bin tax campaigners in Fingal. Three were arrested in Clonsilla and a further nine - including a husband and wife - were arrested in the Huntstown area. Two of those arrested appeared before the high court this afternoon, the rest are due to appear tomorrow. This is the latest Council manoeuvre against the Anti-Bin Tax Campaign. This follows the 5,000 strong solidarity demonstration outside Mountjoy Prison last night, where Joe Higgnis and Clare Daly are detained. read full story / add a comment ![]()

A large crowd gathered outside City Hall in Galway on Tuesday the 9th , on what may be the last chance to do so legally if the city's reactionary and draconian council get their way. People and groups from all walks of Galway life were there, buskers, skateboarders, kite flyers, shopkeepers, sports enthuasiasts, unions, voluntary and political groups. All were united in protest and condemnation at the introduction of the borderline facist byelaws, which are set to strangle through over-regulation nearly all public activity of almost any sort, and destroy the vibe and spirit that Galway is famous for. read full story / add a comment ![]()

WPI Briefing: We have been hearing about the abysmal situation of women in Iraq. Can you give our readers a synopsis of the situation of women in Iraq? Nadia Mahmood: Since 9 April, the situation of women in Iraq has worsened on a daily basis. Women cannot safely walk in the streets. They cannot go to their jobs. During the last months, families have had to accompany their female students to and from secondary schools and universities until they finished their exams a few days ago. The killing of women has become a daily phenomenon. In a country where there is no justice system or policing, women raped by Iraqis or American soldiers are paying the price by being killed in the name of honour. Rape has become a norm. Women cannot even report rapes because they fear the consequences of possibly being killed by male members of their family for bringing 'shame to the family.' read full story / add a comment ![]()

Galway City Council is trying to criminalise the street distribution of leaflets and the right to free assembly. The City Council will vote on a proposal to ban leaflet distribution from the streets of Galway under the guise of a litter byelaw, and to only allow public gatherings under permit. This is actually attacking our democratic rights to free speech and assembly. read full story / add a comment

I submitted this article to Z Magazine awhile ago, hoping to get it into the March edition. The assault on Iraq changed priorities, so it was moved back to the July/August issue. http://www.zmag.org/ZMagSite/curTOC.htm I'm sure most of you know this story already, and there's also a lot more to be told. Thought I'd share this anyway, and if you aren't familiar with Z Magazine, I'd recommend checking it out. -Sean read full story / add a comment ![]()

On Thursday, the 3rd of July, Mary Kelly walked out of Kilrush Circuit Court a free woman, to the sound of the loud cheers of a crowd of delighted anti-war activists and supporters. She had been charged on two counts – trespass (by going over the perimeter fence at Shannon) and criminal damage to a U.S. Naval aircraft that had landed at Shannon for refueling. The jury found her guilty on the much less serious charge of trespass, with the judge adjourning sentencing until October. They could not, however, reach the required ten-two majority verdict on the criminal damage charge, finally stating that they had reached deadlock and that there was no prospect of reaching agreement. Despite strenuous efforts by the prosecuting counsel throughout the four-day trial to discredit the defence, a significant portion of a jury made up of ordinary members of the Irish public could not find it in their hearts to criminalise Mary Kelly. |
