BRU TO ENGAGE IN ALL OUT INDEFINITE STRIKE FROM MONDAY 6TH MARCH
General Secretary Dermot O’Leary said:
“Bus Éireann Management are determined to steer a course towards conflict by issuing ultimatums to staff, before they have had the opportunity to digest, never mind analyse the detail contained in this latest missive. Placing an emphasis on, as it were, parking the race to the bottom agenda for now, and replacing it with broad sweeping generalisations under insider specific language, is obviously designed to create an impression that there has been a major shift in policy, away from raiding workers’ pay packets to plug the policy induced financial gap at Expressway.” read full story / add a comment
Garda Maurice McCabe was an honest Garda who was horrified by the way that ‘respected’ and well connected people got their penalty points written off.
When he reported this practice, he was immediately ostracised. Senior officials saw him as a dangerous outsider who was upsetting local networks of privilege. Far from being ground down, Maurice McCabe started to look at other malpractices.
He blew the whistle on how Gardai in the Cavan –Monaghan area deliberately reduced a charge against Gerard McGrath who had viciously assaulted a female taxi driver. read full story / add a comment

Bus Eireann staff are set to exert their collective rights and strike from the 20th February in an indefinite industrial action in order to secure their pay and conditions. The strike action follows Bus Éireann’s acting chief executive officer Ray Hernan saying the company wanted to reduce its cost base by €30 million per year, with payroll costs accounting for 40 per cent of that reduction. read full story / add a comment
Bord na Mona has been accused of ignoring a recent High Court decision by applying for a horticultural processing facility without assessing the impact on the bogs supplying the peat.
The application is for a horticultural processing facility on a 2.7-hectare site near Naas in County Kildare.
The application to Kildare County Council by Bord na Mona says the project is a joint venture with the Dutch company Legro. ‘Legro are based in Holland and sell potting soils and substrates for the professional and consumer market and is one of largest producers of casing soil for mushroom cultivation with clients all around the world’, according to the application. read full story / add a comment

Take action against fracking by making a personal submission to the Joint Oireachtas Committee. Members of the public who have an interest in the fracking debate are invited by the Oireachtas Joint Committee to inform public policy by making submissions. The Green News wishes to highlight this opportunity and emphasize that any informed member of the public can make a submission by email. There are no specific qualifications required and we will provide links to the relevant documents and provide some tips for drafting and formatting a submission. If you’re opposed to fracking and have read or are willing to read some literature on the subject then you could influence policy by making a brief submission read full story / add a comment
The Irish Times headline recently ran a headline, ‘Imposing French-style wealth tax would only yield €22m.
UCD sociologist Kieran Allen asked for a right to reply but received no response to his request. Here is his exposure of how journalism sometimes functions as propaganda.
The story is based on an ESRI Working Paper entitled ‘Scenarios and Distributional Implications of a Household Wealth Tax in Ireland’. The Irish Times lifts one or two figures from the paper but fails to give any context or critically examine the report. read full story / add a comment
Fluoride addition to public water supplies is a government program started in the early 1900's when it was believed that fluoride strengthened teeth without building up in any other organ. Now that we know the brain is a target for fluoride and that fluoride ingestion doesn't reduce tooth decay, it's time for the EPA to stop playing politics, honor the science and ban water fluoridation for good. EPA has been served with a citizens' petition from environmental, health and medical groups that must, by law, be answered in 90 days. read full story / add a comment

Stephen Donnelly, Independent TD for Wicklow and East Carlow has raised serious concerns that changes announced in this month’s Finance Bill will lead to large domestic and foreign commercial landlords operating completely tax free in Ireland.
This would lead to higher rents for families and businesses, bigger mortgages, less public money for investment in services & infrastructure and an even bigger commercial property bubble in Dublin. read full story / add a comment
While the 1914 Howth gun running that made the 1916 Rising possible is well known, even in Howth itself very little until now was recalled of the part played by local peopl in the Rising, the rise of Sinn Fein and the War of Independence. This story is now told in great detail in what a local community newsletter described as the ""new and magnificent book", Road to Independence – Howth, Sutton and Baldoyle Play Their Part, researched and written by Philip O’Connor over 310 pages, illustrated by 120 photographs mostly from family and private collections. Though its sources are meticulously referenced, the book has been described by detective novelist and former Irish Times journalist, Eugene McEldowney, as a "marvellous read ... written with all the pace of an adventure story, which is really what it is." read full story / add a comment
