This letter gives an update on the continued oppression being inflicted on Iranian workers by the Iranian Dictatorship. It outlines why continued silidarity is necessary. Full text at link. Your August 9th international day of action was hugely welcomed and appreciated. Even if this has not yet led to the release of Mansoor Ossanlou and Mahmoud Salehi, it was a unique show of solidarity with workers and labour activists in Iran who are under constant persecution by the regime. I’m sure you are aware that in the past few months the Islamic regime in Iran has stepped up its persecution of protesting workers, women and students. The current wave of repression and executions is specifically targeting the widespread protests and strikes and the general anti-government climate in the country. The regime wants to intimidate the people. That’s why it has put up gallows in most cities and hanged scores in public in the past few weeks. read full story / add a comment

This an excerpt from a letter sent to Amnesty International, Human Rights Organizations and Student Associations and Groups regarding the illtreatment of students held in Iranian prisons. Full text of letter at the link. I am writing to you regarding the imprisoned students of Amirkabir University in Tehran. The Islamic Republic of Iran has launched a new wave of barbaric oppression in universities. Many students have been banned from studying; many others have been arrested and tortured. Three students of Amirkabir University, Majid Tavakoli, Ahmad Qassaban, and Ehsan Mansouri, have been accused of writing and distributing articles against Islamic Republic authorities and against Islam and they have been arrested. The aforementioned students have rejected the accusations; they have enough evidence to show that those articles were counterfeits made by the regime’s agents to be used against students. read full story / add a comment

Work for the abolition of the death penalty and save the lives of those sentenced to death!” For around two years now the Islamic Republic government has stepped up the execution and torturing of political prisoners and dissidents on the pretext of security. The largest numbers of executions have taken place in the provinces of Khuzestan, Kurdistan, Azarbaijan and Tehran. In this very interesting report from Montreal Canada, we get a glimpse at some of the undercover activities of the state and police forces which are there to protect capitalism. What is reported is that an undercover cop was caught on video throwing rocks at a protest. Clearly the state and police are working hard all the time to manipulate public opinion to believe that protesters always mean violence and are associated with criminals. When they don't get the result that they want, they then go out and make it so. This is not unique to just the place where this report comes from. read full story / add a comment

With a clear lead it seems the Irish Military have won the latest "who sucks" site opinion poll which invited internet users to compare 23 Armed forces logos from across the world. http://www.who-sucks.com/politics/17-fearsome-defense-m...world And a quick look at the who sucks site will tell you why. Here a group of Iranian antiwar activists make clear their feelings about Iran and the support it gets from some on the left. They say: Iran is part of the world imperialist-capitalist system And its contradictions with U.S. imperialism will not change the nature of this regime. Recently we read an article “Standing up to Islamophobia” published in Socialist Worker Online (US). As a group of Iranian antiwar activists, we respond to this article concerning the direction of the antiwar movement. We think that the position of SW(US) is not in the interest of international proletarian revolution and must be opposed based. The position that the ISO is theorizing asserts that the Islamic Republic of Iran (IRI) regime is a progressive and anti-imperialist in nature. We do not believe so, and intend to show that IRI regime is dependent and part of the world imperialist-capitalist system. There's probably nothing much in this, but today's Spiegel reports that several German ministry computers in their Federal government have been found to contain a cunning trojan backdoor exploration thingy which came from China. Of course they already have one that comes from the NSA in the USA, & heck - Real Player invented the whole commercial backdoor thing ( I know Richard Stallman just told me on a youtube video ). & then there was yer man Mohammad Afroze Abdul Razzak who infiltrated Microsoft on behalf of Al Qaeda coz back in 2001 coz they knew Microsoft were infiltrating your computers. So really at the end this is just about language practise & helping you feel European & most of all not getting too cocky about your hardware, software or extensions. All the major powers are in there & the arch-villains from Fu Manchu to Bill Sikes. read full story / add a comment

Friend, and Buddhist monk, Handa Shonin San was killed in a tractor accident at Milton Keynes Pagoda, England, on August 21st. Handa led us to court at the Pit Stop Ploughshares trial and held vigil while the court was in session. For the tenth time since 1978 the Guardia Civil barracks at Durango, Bilbo/Bilbao has been attacked by ETA. This morning's carbomb is reported as having held approximately 70kg of explosives and shrapnel. 2 members of the Guardia Civil have resulted injured. At present there has been no confirmation from the terrorist organisation that they are responsible for the attack, but it is widely felt that this is their first succesful action since calling off their permenant ceasefire of March 2006 last June. read full story / add a comment

Six named Feminist Activist Writers received custodial sentences in the last few months in Iran, since that time three web designers and activists have also received sentences. Pobail The resignation of Pat Rabbitte should be welcomed by those on the left in Ireland, both inside and outside the Labour party. Rabbitte’s record has shown him to be a corrosive element on the Irish left, bitterly opposed to Sinn Féin, the largest political force on the left in Ireland, and all too willing to move the Labour Party to the centre-right and align with Fine Gael, adopting many of their policies wholesale. read full story / add a comment

A video has surfaced on YouTube indicating that the police used provocateurs at the summit in Montebello. Canadian Union of Public Employees or CUPE, has uploaded pictures of the altercation that show the arrested “protesters” have the same footwear as the police. The video and photos show that the protesters are moving into the police line as a union leader challenges their actions and tries to expose them as police officers. read full story / add a comment |
