More sickening crimes exposed on the part of US forces in Afghanistan. Full story at link.

Twelve US soldiers have been charged with crimes in Afghanistan ranging from murdering civilians to keeping body parts as war trophies.

The soldiers from the 5th Stryker Brigade, based in Washington State, were deployed to Kandahar province a year ago, and the murders occurred between January and March, according to charges by army prosecutors made public this week.

"Allegations like this are . . . very serious," Pentagon press secretary Geoff Morrell told a news briefing."Clearly, even if these allegations are proved to be untrue, it is unhelpful. It does not help the perceptions of our forces around the world." (Morrell is a master of understatement) read full story / add a comment

Fidel criticises anti-Semitism on the part of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad but also made clear his understanding of Irans fear of attack from Israel and the US. This is from an interview with Jeffrey Goldberg, a journalist who writes for The Atlantic magazine. Full text at link.

Fidel Castro has criticised Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad for what he called his anti-Semitic attitudes. The former Cuban leader also warned that an escalating conflict between Iran and the West could lead to nuclear war. Over the course of a five-hour discussion, Mr Castro "repeatedly returned to his excoriation of anti-Semitism", and criticised Mr Ahmadinejad for denying the Holocaust.

Mr Castro told Mr Goldberg that he understood Iranian fears of Israeli-American aggression and that he did not believe that sanctions and threat would dissuade Iran from pursuing nuclear weapons. read full story / add a comment

In spite of stringent austerity measures taken by the government , financial markets are beginning to see Ireland as "Europe’s next Greece"..Last week the Standard & Poor’s rating agency cut Ireland's credit rating to AA- . This is the lowest rating in the past 15 years .The revised rating means that this country will now have to pay increased interest rates to ensure the sales of its bonds.

At 9:30 this morning, people gathered on O'Connell Street In Dublin to protest against the presence of war criminal and ex British prime-minister Tony Blair. Blair arrived at Easons at around 10am for the book-signing of his recent autobiography, escorted and protected by a sizable gardai presence. Despite the heavy rain, hundreds of protestors took part. At least one protester managed to get past the heavy security to try to make a citizens arrest of Blair for his war crimes. read full story / add a comment

The boycott movement threatens the visage of respectability and normality which the leaders of apartheid Israel so desperately crave.

Dave Lordan writes in The Electronic Intifada on why he is taking part in the Cultural Boycott of Israel. Full text at link.

I am proud to be among the many Irish and Ireland-based artists from across creative disciplines who have chosen to publicly support the growing campaign of boycott against apartheid Israel. Compared to the imprisoned Palestinian people themselves and to those taking part in flotillas and other perilous anti-apartheid activities in Palestine our contribution and risk may be justly considered small. At most we might lose the chance of lucrative invitations to read, perform or display our works in parts of the US where apartheid Israel's supporters hold the power of censorship. Departments of foreign affairs and ministries of culture may also not include us among those artists they can rely upon to project a lying image of a harmonious, bon vivant and, above all, harmlessly apolitical intelligentsia. We are sure to be slandered and ridiculed by the hired bullies of the global media empires.

In an article in the "Sunday Tribune" on 25th July 2010, Conor McMorrow wrote about the "parachute candidate". The question that can now be asked is what the future holds and what is going to happen to the Labour Party in Sligo/N Leitrim, now that the general public and the dogs in the street, are aware that all is not well within the local party.? what a way to start an election campaign.
What if anything is going to happen?

Mustafa Barghouti MP writes about the pressure that once again is being imposed on the palestinian people to enter into so called Peace Talks. Dr Barghouti believes that such talks without a clear agenda, timetable or without a binding mechanism for implementation will result in a betrayal of the Palestinian People. Full article at link.

We have followed with great concern the increasing external pressure, especially from the U.S. and Israel, on the PLO leadership to shift from indirect negotiations (which have not resulted in any progress) to direct negotiations without clear and binding terms of reference regarding a complete halt of all settlement activities in the occupied Palestinian territory - including in Jerusalem. read full story / add a comment

What jumps out at me about the recent report by PNA (Psychiatric Nurses Association) to the Minister of Health is that it underlines a definite antagonism between providers and patients in the mental health services. It conveys graphically and in a rather stock way a strong underlying sense of fear and loathing of mental patients. Undoubtedly relations between patients and nurses can assume knife-edge proportions at times. And it is, as we all know from human experience, at times of heightened tension or drama that basic and fundamental motivation emerges clearly in the spotlight. I believe Mr. Kavanagh (general secretary of PNA) when he says nurses in their hundreds have been injured by patients. I am sure he, too, can remember the names of John Carthy and Anthony Burke. read full story / add a comment
