Given their professed position as ‘Internationalists’ there is no way that the SP in Ireland can write off their movements links with the right wing POA as an English Issue, nor can they with any credibility describe the actions of the POA here as ‘Industrial Action’. What is happening in Maghaberry is a sustained campaign of human rights abuses, conducted against vulnerable political prisoners and directed by the ‘Prison Officers Association’ along the the Gaol administration. read full story / add a comment

Two co-ordinated gun attacks on 4 January 1976 in British Occupied Ireland, shot dead two unarmed members of the Reavey family and three members of the O'Dowd family, with another two wounded, one of them died a month later. These murders were part of a string of sectarian attacks on Catholics and Irish nationalists by an alliance of British soldiers and British police officers. Billy McCaughey from the police Special Patrol Group, admitted taking part and accused another British police officer, of being involved. His colleague, John Weir, said two British police officers and a British soldier were involved The O'Dowd and Reavey murders, in what became known as the murder triangle, were a major factor, in young men and women like 19 year old Martin Corey from nearby Lurgan, joining the IRA, to defend their communities from British State terrorism. read full story / add a comment

In many countries fighting for national liberation, the revolutionary forces are coordinated by a 'broad front'. Throughout history, coalition's of anti- imperialist groups have come together to wage a revolutionary class war that seeks to end the exploitation of the working class and establish socialism.

A lot has been written about the Michael McKevitt case over the years since his incarceration in 2001. Whether his reputation as an unrepentant republican is palatable to many people or not, he has endured the wrath of a very vicious print media campaign throughout that time and even before. We overlook the fact that the media onslaught was also waged against his entire family without any justification whatsoever and the standards used against them fell well below anything that we could even attempt to describe as 'normal practice'. read full story / add a comment

People are getting fed up. We have had the Anglo Tapes released and the government decides to go after the whistle blower instead. Since 2008 unemployed has risen to 14% and it would be a lot higher only that 40,000 people are leaving the country every year. The government job initiative is welfare for business interests and as described here is a scam. It is time to high light this even though many have known it for months.

It seems like everytime I view the FAS website more and more real jobs are disappearing from it and being replaced with free labour internships. When I search for specific sectors now all I seem to find are internships. This scheme is absolutely sickening me as it has potentially destroyed several thousand entry level jobs. I can't believe that Joan Burton and the Labour Party have completely ruined the youth labour market with a scheme which is:

-replacing real paid jobs with "internships"
-exploiting the jobless
-wasting tax-payer money to provide companies with free labour
-putting underqualified/inexperienced/unvetted people in jobs with far too much responsibility(working with kids etc...)
-distorting our unemployment figures
-putting existing paid jobs at risk
-being used to makeup for a shortfall of skills in the public service due to the recruitment embargo read full story / add a comment

New book entitled 'Let us Rise!' on the 1913 Dublin Lockout including essay on role of women, the solidarity effort in Britain, the revolutionary aftershock and a response by Joe Higgins TD to Jack O'Connor's Larkin graveside speech

Official Launch Monday 15th July 6:30pm Gutter Bookshop, Cow Lane, Temple Bar

Commenting on the imminent launch of Let us Rise! which will be available from all good bookshops from next week Joe Higgins TD said:

“This book commemorates the immortal 1913 Dublin Lockout. This struggle, with brilliant leaders like Jim Larkin and James Connolly, heralded the emergence of the working class as the key social and political force. It ushered in a decade of struggle which could have changed the course of Irish history.

“This period is rich in lessons for working class people today. The struggle waged in 1913 is a beacon that can shine a bright light on the way forward, if its lessons are fully absorbed.” read full story / add a comment

The power of the Executive to cast a man into prison without formulating any charge known to the law, and particularly to deny him the judgment of his peers, is in the highest degree odious and is the foundation of all totalitarian government whether Nazi or Communist. - Winston Churchill - Internment

Research commissioned by a group of British, backbench, Tory MPs conclude, that European judges have ruled more than 270 cases taken against Britain, has “breached a Convention right”. The final report, written by Robert Broadhurst, a legal researcher, found that since Britain signed up to the European Court of Human Right’s jurisdiction in 1966, there are more than 350 rulings on UK violation of human rights. The number of judgments made against the UK violating human rights stands at 271, against only 86 ruling otherwise”. read full story / add a comment
