Sunday June 28th saw the most intense burst of direct action against Shell in Erris so far in this phase of the campaign to thwart the Great Gas Robbery and the destruction of Erris along with its community. A tripod on a road bridge near McGrath's Bar held up vital repair gear for the pipeline winching operation for over four hours. This was followed up by a five-person lock-on on the same road a bit nearer the Shell compound. Together, they delayed winching operations for twelve hours, and there were nine arrests in all. Meanwhile, three Solidarity Campers managed to sneak into the Shell compound at Glengad and get out without being arrested. read full story / add a comment

Working people continue to bear the brunt of the economic recession in terms on job cuts, poverty wages and house repossessions, while the rich and powerful in our society are bailed out again. This is state capitalism and comes under various forms from thatcherism to neo-liberalism.

The Belfast Anarchist Communist Discussion Group, set up by the Belfast branch of the Workers Solidarity Movement recently invited Michael Reinsborough to give a talk on the topic of neo-liberalism.

The public meeting took place on Wednesday 17th June in the Belfast Unemployment Centre.

Yesterday, in Shop Street, activists and supporters of Shell to Sea and Galway Free Palestine Campaign found common cause and empathy in their resistance to the murderous abuse of state and corporate power: in the case of Israel; egregious and genocidal, in the case of Shell, the bending of corrupt governments to its will; from the judicial murder of the Ogoni 9 in Nigeria to, in Ireland, the jailing of the Rossport 5, economic treason through the giveaway of the Corrib field gas by notorious corrupt politicians, the criminalization and bulldozing of dissent through the deployment of Navy gunships, the shoot-to-kill Emergency Response Unit and a security outfit, hand in glove with the Garda, arm-in-arm with an openly fascist paramilitary group and favoured by Fianna Fail for its Ard Fheiseanna over the past few years. read full story / add a comment

On 26 June, Amnesty Ireland issued a special report "BREAKING THE CHAIN: ENDING IRELAND'S ROLE IN RENDITION". At the launch of the report, Colm O'Gorman Amnesty Director described as "barely credible" Green Party TD Ciaran Cuffe's statement that he did not believe that Shannon airport was being used by US flights involved in extraordinary rendition.
Meanwhile, business as usual at Shannon, with Omni air troop carriers, Hercules C130 warplane, and National (Murray) Air munitions plane at Shannon on 27 June 2009 read full story / add a comment

Ógra Shinn Féin protested at Belfast City Hall on Friday 26 June opposing the move by the City Council to fly the British army flag as part of ‘armed forces day.’

The republican youth group, alongside Sinn Féin activists, joined in solidarity with RFJ (Relatives for Justice) and the victims of British state murder and collusion to highlight their opposition to the controversial decision.

While the Belfast City Hall gates where adorned with large black ribbons, the protesters held banners with anti collusion and state murder slogans on them. The assembled crowd was addressed by the RFJ director Mark Thompson, and Sinn Féin MLA Gerry Kelly before 70 black balloons where released into the air representing all the young people who were murdered by the British Army.

Although for many readers it might seem in poor taste to publish words from either the UVF or Red Hand Comando on this website- it may also be understood as serving an important archive role. The IRA issued its order to decommission and abandon arms on the 28th of July 2005.

However it has not been until today an arguably older militia tendency & organisation (if in name only on) our island, the UVF and a smaller but no less murderous group "the Red Hand Comando" issued an equivalent order to their membership.

The island of Martinique is in the Carribean sea where reggae, voodoo, rum & hurricanes come from. It is also an integral part of France and as such its map appears on Euro bank notes at the bottom in a little insert. Four months ago the people of Martinique and neighbouring Gaudelope paralysed their local economies with strike actions, civil unrest, general un-mellowness and all round anti-Sarkozy attitude. This was in no small part due to their extraordinarily high levels of unemployment compared to the rest of France. Today Sarkozy has started a tour of "overseas France" and has proposed a referendum on autonomy but not independence. read full story / add a comment
About 1 in every 35 Gardai working in the state are on Shell duty, just like these

A written reply to a Dáil question by Aengus Ó Snodaigh by justice minister Dermot Ahern shows that Garda personnel strength in a large majority of Irish counties is less than the number of Gardai deployed in Erris to protect Shell's interests. For example, Shell has more cops than Co. Clare, Co. Kerry, or Co Sligo. Shell also has more cops defending its corrupt Corrib Gas Project than there are Gardai 'defending' the citizens of Galway, Waterford or Dún Laoghaire. read full story / add a comment

Of course news attention is overwhelmingly focussed today on the passing of the king of pop, Michael Jackson. We are even told that global internet traffic slowed whilst humanity came to terms with its loss. However, hard as it is believe and as impalatable as it may be for some to stomach, in poorer countries life has appeared to have gone as normal.

General Romeo Vasquez chief of staff of the Honduran army put tanks on the streets surrounding the presidential palace where democratically elected Mr Manuel Zelaya lives and up till yesterday was mostly worrying about winning a referendum which will allow him to be re-elected and sit more terms. read full story / add a comment

In any country with a half way critical media, the last few months would have been disastrous for Shell. In a crucial period in Shell’s imposition of an experimental gas pipeline on the people of Erris it emerges that Michael Dwyer, one of the security guards on this project, was part of an attempt to trigger a civil war in Bolivia. Soon after that it became clear that at least three others who had worked as security guards at the Shell compound had travelled to Bolivia with Dwyer and were wanted there for questioning. Some, it emerged, had links to fascist organizations in Eastern Europe. read full story / add a comment

In a reprise of last year's repeated arrests on the waters of Broadhaven Bay, Shell's Gardai have arrested Pat 'the Chief' O'Donnell and his son Jonathan while they were fishing in Broadhaven Bay this morning. Their two boats were commandeered by Gardai and brought to Ballyglass pier under tow and naval escort. Gardai claim that the two boats were 'loitering', the new term for criminalising fishermen exercising their rights to fish in their native waters. Pat's brother Martin is currently still on the water in the bay fishing in his boat. Meanwhile the Solitaire is less than an hour away from arriving off Glengad. read full story / add a comment

So Sarkozy – and others in the UK – cry ‘Ban the burkha!’

What do they have against it? I picked up a copy of the Daily Express (Wednesday 24th June 2009) which carried the loud headline “Ban the Burkha here in Britain” (all in capitals in the original, of course) with my morning coffee, hoping to shed some light on the answer. read full story / add a comment
Pat 'The Chief' O'Donnell
mayo / environment / news report Thursday June 25, 2009 00:15 by S2S   image 1 image
The last few days have seen some very interesting developments in the situation after Pat O'Donnell's boat was sunk. First of all, we had an appeal from Pat for State protection (see below) to the Gardai on Sunday. This was read out in full on local radio on Wednesday, and it went into some other media coverage too. Following on from this, the Gardai called out to Mr. O'Donnell, and asked him what he wanted in terms of protection – his reply was: a 500 metre exclusion zone around his boat, and a Garda RIB to accompany him when he goes out. They agreed to the second one, and didn't really comment on the first(!).

Two swimmers were also arrested this evening Wednesday, despite being well outside Shell's so-called exclusion zone. Well, the 200+ Gardai up here have to justify their existence somehow... read full story / add a comment
