AFTER-WORK ANTI-WAR SOLIDARITY VIGIL, ST PATRICK'S CATHEDRAL, 6.30pm

The anti-war vigil held earlier this evening in solidarity with the Afghan hunger strikers was a modest success. In total, about 40 or so anti-war activists, from a wide range of groups (and none), turned up outside St Patrick's Cathedral. This was a wonderful turnout, when one considers that the vigil was called that morning. We expect the numbers to increase as word of these daily anti-war solidarity vigils spreads.

As of tomorrow, solidarity vigils will be held outside the cathedral at 12.30pm and 6.30pm daily. Please ensure that you attend at least one of these events. The 12.30 vigil is especially important.

Anti-war activists have decided to offer tangible support to the Afghan hunger strikers by continuing to organise the 6.30pm vigil. Residents Against Racism, and others, are putting enormous work into organising solidarity during the day and it is only right that the anti-war movement mobilises in support of their efforts. We must offer more than mere words.

At a meeting held in the wake of last night's (Tuesday) vigil, anti-war activists agreed to continue with the 6.30pm vigil. These will be held each evening between 6.30pm and 7.30pm, and it is very important that everybody makes a genuine effort to be there. If you are free during the day, go to the vigil at 12.30pm; if you are working, turn up at 6.30pm. But do something!

Please bring placards (preferably home-made and colourful!) and your solidarity to tonight's vigil. And spread the word!

Warm regards,

Fintan Lane,
Anti-War Ireland

One of the most famous celebrity islamophobes has been exposed as a fraud and is fleeing Holland to join the payroll of the American Enterprise Institute. Cited often on Indymedia and other venues as an exemplar of feminist criticism of "islamofascists" it turns out that many details of her ordeal at the hands of Somali islamicists may be false.

The fact that she is so allied to neocons ought to give pause to those that are too enthusiastic in their blanket attacks on Islam. Of course it doesn't discredit /all/ critics of Islam, or even some of her own criticisms, but it does show that such criticisms are happily amplified and exploited by sinister forces. read full story / add a comment

The traditional view of Irish history is based on the premise that the Irish people had a moral right to fight for their political, economic, social and cultural independence from Imperialist Britain.

According to Dr. Christine Kinealy,(A New History of Ireland, This Great Calamity, etc.) an opposing view began to emerge in Ireland in the 1930s, when a number of leading Irish Academics, following the lead of earlier British historians, set an agenda for the systematic revision of traditional Irish History, which they claimed was rife with “nationalist myths”. Their declared mission was to replace this so-called mythology with objective, “value-free history”.

In her essay, “Beyond Revisionism”, Dr. Kinealy says that the revisionist movement gained a new prominence in the battle for Irish hearts and minds during the 1960’s when the IRA campaign intensified: “Challenging nationalist mythology became an important ideological preoccupation of a new generation of historians”. read full story / add a comment

A vigil in solidarity with the Afghan hunger strikers, who are currently in St Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin, will be held outside the building at 6.30pm today. Organised by anti-war activists, the vigil is intended to show our support and solidarity with those inside in their resistance to their impending deportation back to war-torn Afghanistan.

Please make a special effort to attend and encourage others to come along also. This is important. These men have been without food since Sunday and have also decided to refuse water. It is imperative that the extent of public support for their demand to remain in Ireland is made clear to Minister McDowell and the Fianna Fail/PD government.

A vigil will also be held at 12.30pm today for those who can make it during the day.

The Irish Anti War Movement supports the asylum claims of the Afghan hunger strikers in St Patrick’s Cathedral. The desperate measure by the 36 asylum seekers highlights the lies and the myth that the US and its allies are spreading democracy through its ‘war on terror’. The reality is that the US has replaced one group of thugs that it helped to create and fund – the Taliban, with another group that it now funds – the Northern Alliance (NA), to rule Afghanistan. The real agenda behind the US ‘war on terror’ is the extension of US power and dominance in the world. The Irish Anti War Movement calls on the Irish government to approve their asylum claims in recognition of the continued oppression and absence of democracy that exists in Afghanistan.

The latest Christian Aid report, ‘The climate of poverty: the facts, fears and hope’, launched to coincide with Christian Aid Week (14-20 May), highlights that climate change is now threatening development goals for billions of the world’s poorest people.

The report reveals the stark reality that a staggering 182 million people in sub-Saharan Africa alone could die of disease directly attributable to climate change by the end of the century. Many millions more throughout the world face death and devastation due to climate-induced floods, famine, drought and conflict.

The report calls on the Irish government to lead rich countries in taking urgent action to curb global warming.
