It has been exactly one year since the arrest on October 3 2004 of "Mikel Antza" (Mikel Albizu born 1961), a writer attributed with leading the organisation ETA since 1992, thought to be directly responsible for 120 deaths. He was arrested with his partner "anboto" (Soledad Iparagirre - born 1961) who is blamed for 14 deaths. They were detained in a villa at Salíes-de-Béarn with 17 other presumed members of ETA, a quantity of arms, 1,300 kilograms of explosive and two SAM7 rocket launchers (supplied by irish dissident republicans). This morning the succesors to that couple were arrested (also in France) along with a quantity of arms in the 6th joint operation between Spain and France aimed at the total disarticulation of the terrorist group. read full story / add a comment

Today's editorial in the Irish Times asserts that: "Shell's proposals went through the full gamut of the planning process during which those who objected were given full rights to make known their views" (!!!) Further on it praises the Judge who had the five men locked up: "Mr Justice Finnegan, President of the High Court, stood alone in recent weeks in upholding the rule of law, a duty he executed with exemplary even-handedness and for which he deserves to be thanked. Warren Mitofsky, founder-president of one of the two polling firms that conducted the exit polls in the US presidential elections of November 2004, has agreed to debate the likely cause of the significant discrepancies between the exit poll data, which predicted that John Kerry would win with a margin of 3% of the popular vote, and the final vote tallies, which returned George Bush to the White House with a margin of 2.5%. The debate will be sponsored by the University of Pennsylvania's Center for Organizational Dynamics and Department of Political Science, and will take place at lunchtime in Logan Hall, 249 South 36th Street, Philadelphia, on 14 October. For further details, please see the university's announcement below. read full story / add a comment

Shortly after his release from Abu Ghraib prison, Hajj Ali was treated by a psychologist, Dr. Mohammed al-Karchi, who gave him sedatives to sleep and other drugs to stimulate his appetite. In the past, he says, he believed that forgiveness is always better than revenge, but now he is filled with a hatred that he cannot shake off. The worst thing about it, says Hajj Ali, is that he hates himself for hating others. "How can it be," he asks, "that the victims are not being called as witnesses, that no one wants to hear their version of the story? How can it be that someone like Davis gets only half a year in prison?" "Davis and the others," he says, "killed our souls." read full story / add a comment

As the bloodshed in Iraq continues to get a lot of media attention because of America's involvement, in a striking contrast, the ongoing ethnic cleansing in Darfur, West Sudan, where an estimated 180,000 people have died in a campaign of genocide, merits wide indifference. "Marriages are torn apart by the stress of coping with the abuses of government and the legal system, relationships with friends, relatives, children, and the ability to enjoy life can be twisted inside out." "They produce psychological depression, anxiety, substance abuse, sexual problems, obesity, and many other forms of disturbance that plague millions of people across the globe." "When you suffer in silence, when you allow the wrongs to stand without seeking redress and accountability, when you avoid demanding justice, you have become part of the problem. Proposed wording for 41.2.1 The State recognises caring work done within the home, often extending to the community, as a social and economic activity that produces social welfare and economic wealth, and entitles carers, starting with mothers, to economic and other support. The State also recognises that in rural areas caring work has included work on the land which has kept families and communities alive and strong despite poverty and emigration. Proposed wording 41.2.2 The State shall therefore ensure that carers, starting with mothers, are not obliged by economic necessity to engage in waged work which would increase their workload, and shall provide workers in the home with independent remuneration and pensions. read full story / add a comment
