The coming year will be a challenging one for working-class people in Ireland and across Europe. The threats facing us are manifold. Economically people are faced with the consequences of the austerity programme imposed on them by the EU political and financial elite. For Irish Republicans increasing repression highlights the reality of the old imperialism of British rule in Ireland. read full story / add a comment

We strongly condemn Thursday’s massacre at Sirnak in which 36 civilian Kurds were killed by Turkish air strikes. This year more than 4,500 people have been arrested under nebulous “terrorism” charges in Turkey, including dozens of journalists last week. This AKP-directed pogram, known as the KCK Case, began in 2009 against any Kurdish dissent in Turkey. Mayors, local councillors, journalists, human rights activists and Kurdish party workers are targeted. read full story / add a comment

Ports up and down the West Coast were blockaded, from Seattle to San Diego. The blockade was called in solidarity with longshore workers fighting a union-busting assault in Longview, Washington and port truckers seeking union recognition in the ports of Los Angeles/Long Beach. This support should have been greeted. But now the class war on the West Coast docks is coming to a head, and it can't be waged from the outside. Bay Area labor has called for a caravan to Longview. The goal should be a real occupation of the terminal by the workers to prevent the loading of the scab cargo. Longshore militants have called on the longshore unions to shut down every port on the West Coast, and the East and Gulf Coasts, to smash EGT's union-busting. Can it be done? Yes, but only though sharp struggle against the pro-capitalist labor bureaucracy. read full story / add a comment

Claiming Our Future is campaigning for the introduction of measures to tax wealth.  As you all know it is very important that there is a counter argument to the austerity approach being pursued by government. The type of tax options that are being proposed include 1. A levy on assets and property worth over €1 million 2. High net worth Irish citizens paying their dues here so that the number of tax exiles decreases 3. Eliminating tax breaks for those with high incomes so that they pay their fair share 4. A levy on financial transactions (Tobin Tax) 5. A higher tax rate on incomes over €100k It would be great if you could support the campaign by Go to www.claimingourfuture.ie where you will find information and facts about wealth and taxation. Tell all your contacts and friends about it. Putting it on your organisations website. read full story / add a comment

The writer of a letter to the Irish Times was surprised when it was published on the 22nd. inst. it was in response to an earlier letter written by a Ms. O'Dwyer expounding the virtue of German efficiency. His letter is reproduced in the full content below. It was expected that there would have been a vigorous response to it, instead no response was published, however two days later, two letters were published in regard to Ms. O'Dwyer original letter. The peculiar aspect to these letters was that they were published under a different heading to the first two letters. I have never seen that happen before despite being a reader of the IT for over twenty years. The writer of the letter is concerned that powerful forces influenced the Irish Times to kill the topic, that is that Germany is involved in a conspiracy so as to bring about a federal Europe through economic manipulation of the economies of the peripheral states of Europe. He also wonders if he is in danger, I'm not sure. read full story / add a comment

This year ending (2011) and the new year starting (2012) marks the tenth anniversary of the illegitimate, illegal and unjust wars of aggression and colonial occupation being waged against the people of Afghanistan and Iraq that destabilised the Middle East and indeed the whole world and things are worse than ever there :-( read full story / add a comment

Now Michael D has gone a step further from his ceremonial role in supporting war-mongering. He is openly feeding the feel-good factor for the FG-Labour government anti-social economic and political decisions. At a time of extraordinary hardship for the people of Ireland caused by the regressive and pro-business politics of Labour and FG, he comes out to send a Christmas message of "hope" in economic recovery. It is surely strange for a so called "socialist" and "progressive" to come out in such base way to support the fact that his government has passed the burden of the crisis onto the shoulders of the ordinary people of Ireland. read full story / add a comment

Maybe the time has come again to look inwards instead of outwards. Like we did in the early and mid 1950’s. Let us not wait for the prompt from hypocrites from abroad. Create liberty, equality, fraternity; for all mental patients in Ireland. And for everyone in Ireland including children about to be born now around the Feast of The Nativity. read full story / add a comment
