I just happen to work very near the Department of Finance and so I was a first hand witness to how events unfolded on November 3rd during the Students’ Protest. I came out to support the students -“hijack their protest” according to the lazy, subservient and incredibly pro-rich Irish mainstream media journalists, who are unable to understand a simple concept called “Solidarity”. read full story / add a comment

The Ireland Institute believes that the debate to date has been dominated by a narrow consensus that does not question the structures within which the crisis is being played out. This consensus regards capitalism as the right and natural way to organise the economy and society: no alternative is admitted. In this worldview, competition, individualism, small government, privatisation, free trade and free movement of capital are self-evidently good and the means to economic success. read full story / add a comment

The Irish Congress of Trade Unions is to “stage” a protest against budget cuts in Dublin on November 27th. For anyone keeping an eye on the unions’ shenanigans the word “stage” is quite appropriate – perhaps “stage-manage” would be even better. For these same union leaders have worked hand-in-hand with the current government in the greatest assault on Irish workers since the great lock-out of 1913. While that conflict paved the way for the 1916 rising, we can be quite sure that our current leaders and their cronies will do everything in their power to ensure that as little as possible changes this time round. read full story / add a comment

The events of the student march on Wednesday the 3rd of November were a turning point in the attitude of the state towards the general populace. As we look down the barrel of what is likely to be the harshest budget in the history of the country, the Government can no longer contain the anger of the Irish people. What happened on Wednesday was proof of this. read full story / add a comment
