Fars Gavily, Eqbal Latifi, Sediq Sobhani, Khaled Savari, Teyeb Mollaei, Teyeb Chatei, Yaddollah Moradi, Sediq Amjadi, Mohioldin Rajabi, Habibollah Kale-kani and Abbas Andriani, 11 worker activists who were arrested on May 1st in Sanandage have been sentenced to 91 days of imprisonment and 10 lashes for taking part in a may 1st demonstration. read full story / add a comment

The Sunday Tribune has slowly but surely ceased to be a quality 'News' paper. Media baron Sir Tony may own just a minority share but he's the only one paying all the Sunday Tribune's salaries and bills. Which explains why it shamelessly, just a fortnight ago, poked a five-page dig at O'Reilly's corporate rival Denis O'Brien who is trying to take over Sir Anto's INM. The Sunday Tribune has deceptively swapped good news reporting for opinion and cheaply-found tabloid stories of human interest.... as expected O'Brien came away without even a bruise. A few months ago the Sunday Tribune published a document alleging serious wrongdoing at construction and insurance billionaire Sean Quinn's Quinn-Direct company. Quinn has sued....... it now looks like Sir Anthony may need the bandages!!!!!! (see Irish Times story below) read full story / add a comment

The Irish Junior Shooting Team ended off a highly successful tour this week at the 15th Annual Great Britain Junior International Event, with Susan Cunningham (17, Kells, Co. Meath) winning the Gold Medal in the Junior Women's Air Rifle Grand Prix competition and Damien Fagan (20, Navan, Co. Having had our bags stolen in Belfast many years ago, we got invited to Anderstown social club by some fellas who had tried to stop the snatchers and we went to the club. It is a memory etched onto my brain and says something important about community memory and retaining those places for the upcoming generations of this Our Island. Politically naive southerners like myself did not know the North of Ireland, nor where it was 'safe' to go , back in the nineties; but you learn quickly enough. our hiking trip coincided with some appalling tragedies and personal dangers that are largely gone. This important conference provides activists of all hues with a chance to reflect on the sources of violence in our culture. It aims to combine contributions from exciting and innovative theorists with the lived experience of grassroots resisters. Periods of reflection and sharing of experience and theory are often underestimated as a source of strength and wisdom, particularly in anti-war activism. I would therefore urge anyone who feels they have something to say about resistance to mainstream cultural imperatives that ask us to tolerate violence to think about contributing to this conference. If you do not feel able to do so, please think about attending and participating more informally. The information is below. The Institute for Feminism and Religion is a not-for-profit organisation. Rooming in’ involves the care of a newborn infant in a cot near the mother’s bed instead of in a nursery during their hospital stay. This has very many positive advantages for the mother and baby in terms of bonding and getting to know the new baby’s routine in the early days of its life and also the instant availability of the mother for feeding, a recognised bonding time be it bottle or breast. Rooming in also has many advantages for maternity hospitals in terms reduction in requirements for nursery spaces in hospitals and therefore, reduction in numbers of staff required to supervise the nurseries and take care of the infants. Most Irish maternity hospitals operate a full rooming in policy but the question is - Do Irish Maternity Hospitals support rooming in? read full story / add a comment

This year, the Nineteenth Desmond Greaves School will consider the theme: ‘Labour and Republicanism – The Way Forward?’ It will be held in the ATGWU Hall at 55 Middle Abbey St, Dublin 1, from Friday, August 24th to Sunday, August 26th. The School will discuss republicanism as a political philosophy, the relationships and tensions between nationalism, republicanism, and socialism, and how republicanism and labour cna contribute to progressive change in today's Ireland.
