international / anti-war / imperialism / press release Thursday November 20, 2008 13:51 by Niamh Nic Carthaigh   video 1 video file
Hundreds of thousands of people are on the run, fleeing a war that rages in eastern Congo, in the provinces of North and South Kivu. They are frightened. Many are sick or wounded. Others have been harassed or raped, or have had everything they own stolen. The people of the Kivus are in a critical condition. The destiny of everyone in this region is shaped by the war. The story of their struggle to survive needs to be told.

Today, November 20, humanitarian medical aid agency Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF) is launching an international multimedia campaign, entitled Condition: Critical – Voices from the war in eastern Congo. read full story / add a comment

"He blocks access to our education, we block his access to the opening. - Pa O' Brien ULSU President, advocate of a graduate tax and Fianna Fail member.

Minister Martin Cullen attended the opening of the newly built Irish Chamber Orchestra (ICO) building on University of Limerick campus last Monday evening. Ahead of the scheduled event, ULSU issued a press release headlined "UL Students to block Minister from ICO opening". What actually transpired was an entirely different set of events.

At about 1pm, ULSU officers led an impressive turnout of about 400 students towards the Thomond Bridge on campus to block vehicular access to the ICO. The only other access to the building was via the Living way pedestrian bridge, which ULSU president Pa O'Brien ensured us was being monitored by a fellow SU officer. The fact that the location chosen for the blockade was not the building Cullen intended on attending was originally put down to he assumed tactical naivety of the union officers, but the motives for the location chosen later became apparent. read full story / add a comment

Barack Obama’s victory has enthused millions of people across the globe. But anti-war activists should be careful not to cheer him too loudly. Much was made of his claim to want to meet Iran’s president Ahmadinejad “without preconditions” to sort out the ‘disagreements’ . And, after all, both have quite a lot in common: they want to see the Shia government succeed in Iraq and are strong opponents of the Taliban in Afghanistan. But Obama has also made clear that he will do “anything” to stop Iran from developing the facility to produce nuclear weapons. He has “not ruled out” the prospect of war. read full story / add a comment

Sarah Carey is apparently a responsible 'yes' voter when it comes to Lisbon. We will all therefore appreciate the terrible position she was put in when she discovered that The Times of London (Irish version) was banning all pro Lisbon pieces in its pages. Carey went along with this - for a good long while, in fact. She has just fetched up however in the pages of the Irish Times, that bastion of balanced and fair journalism (not), armed with a revivified conscience, describing the horrors of the editorial interference of Frank Fitzgibbon at the London Times and wishing she had had the courage to bring the truth of his editorial perfidy to the world before. Read her heart-rending tale here:

http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/opinion/2008/1119/1....html

Sarah tells us that when reading anything in a newspaper, we had better be asking ourselves who is writing it and what is their agenda. Quite so.

The report found many gays are isolated

A new study of the lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans people in the West of Ireland has found that nearly 70% of them have suffered some form of discrimination.

90% felt isolated at times because of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

The report was commissioned by LGBT West - a consortium of statutory and voluntary service providers in counties Mayo, Galway and Roscommon, including county councils, rural and city partnership companies and lesbian and gay groups.

50% of those who had experienced discrimination were verbally abused and 20% had been physically attacked read full story / add a comment
