It's now official, the Irish state is in talks with the EU and the IMF about a so called 'rescue plan' to bail out the Irish capitalist class from the disaster created by the international crash of the capitalist economic system. A crisis that was magnified in Ireland by the corruption of local crony capitalism on the one hand and the dependency of the economy on 'globalization' on the other. Trapped between such a cast of crooks and idiots it is perhaps not surprising that many in Ireland hope things will be improved when the running of our lives will be handed over to those who many hope might have a clue. read full story / add a comment

SIPTU is absolutely opposed to the lifting of the cap on University tuition fees proposed through the Browne review which could see fees soar to an extortionate rate of up to £12,000 per year. It beggars belief that these proposals be put forward at anytime, never mind in the depths of one of the harshest economic recessions. The Browne review or any other proposed hike in student or tuition fees can not be allowed to happen, this will only result in preventing thousands of young people from low to middle income earning families from going to University and in thousands more emigrating with little to no prospects here. read full story / add a comment ![]()

dublin / miscellaneous / event notice Tuesday November 16, 2010 17:09 by The Ireland Institute
The Ireland Institute believes that the debate to date has been dominated by a narrow consensus that does not question the structures within which the crisis is being played out. This consensus regards capitalism as the right and natural way to organise the economy and society: no alternative is admitted. In this worldview, competition, individualism, small government, privatisation, free trade and free movement of capital are self-evidently good and the means to economic success. read full story / add a comment

The Irish Singer's Own Book in Boston, 1880 credited this song to Patrick Carpenter, a poet and native of Skibbereen. It was published in 1915 where Herbert Hughes said it had been found in County Tyrone. It is sung here by Ronnie Drew. It is today the anthem of Irish immigrants worldwide or the Rebels Yell of Irish Diaporadoes. The line " And loud and high we'll raise the cry, "Revenge for Skibbereen!" is the battle cry of Ireland's 80 million Diasporadoes scattered around the planet today. read full story / add a comment
