Swathes of rainforest and coral reefs are being destroyed by a nickel mining boom in Indonesia sparked by the Net Zero race to transition away from fossil fuels. Is this supposed to be 'green'?

Use of Shannon by US military

category dublin | anti-war / imperialism | event notice author Wednesday September 14, 2005 12:56author by Sinead Ni Bhroin - Irish Anti War Movementauthor email secretary at irishantiwar dot orgauthor phone 087 9266764 Report this post to the editors

no surprise to anti-war movement

PHOTO OPPORTUNITY: Anti-war activists will be holding a vigil at O Connell bridge today at 5.30pm for the victims of New Orleans and Iraq. They will be holding a banner reading "Sept. 24th Shannon: Gateway to Iraq" which is highlighting Ireland's complicity with Bush's war on Iraq.

The report in today's Irish Times that US military and CIA aircraft landing at Shannon are to be monitored by the UN for illegal detainees comes as no surprise to the Irish Anti-War Movement. Shannon Airport has been used as one of the key stop-off points in Europe for the US military and CIA in the war on Iraq and for the transport of suspect 'terrorist' prisoners. Officially over 150,000 US troops passed through Shannon in the first six months of this year. It is time the government respected the wishes of the majority of people in Ireland and stopped the use of Shannon by US military. The Irish Anti-War Movement is holding a peace festival against Ireland's complicity with the war on Iraq on Saturday September 24th in Shannon. That will be an opportunity to say to Bertie Ahern: not one more Iraqi must be killed in our name. End the use of Shannon by the US war machine immediately.

There you have it, Bertie (and Michael McDo-ill) (no, we must not forget Michael). The chickens are finally coming home to roost. You never thought the day would come, but rest assured it is coming.

Could Pat Sullivan confrim what of those numbers posted are NOT of an SWP member???

Just curious, as I genuinely wonder if the IAWM is or is not now merely a rump of SWP members, far removed from the broad based campaign it once was??

Organized by Cosantoiri Siochana / Peace Network

Antiwar groups in the US such as the ANSWER Coalition and United for
Peace and Justice are organizing a number of activities against the Iraq
war on the weekend from September 24th to the 26th. The planned events
range from lobbying politicians, concerts and marches to civil
disobedience. Other groups around the world are also demonstrating
against war on that day. In Ireland, the IAWM, PANA and the NGO Peace
Alliance have decided to hold a demonstration at Shannon on the day.

The focus of Irish libertarians and others in the anti-war movement has
always been on Shannon - the location where Ireland is directly involved
in and participating in the "war on terror". However there hasn't been
any activity at Shannon since George Bush's visit some 15
months ago.

A number of anti-war activists have decided to try to organize to travel
to Shannon on the same day as we feel it is important to continue to
keep at least some measure of pressure on the state and to highlight
that this is not a "dead" issue.

To this end, we are trying to organize a bus from Dublin to Shannon. The
bus will be go ahead only if enough definite commitments are made by
people. With 40 people traveling down, the cost per person will be €15.
If 50 people come down, then the cost will drop to €12 per person.

However if 40 tickets have not been sold by Wednesday 21st, then the bus
will be canceled and all ticket-holders will be refunded.
Unfortunately, there are no funds available to subsidize the cost of
empty seats on the bus (and it would be unfair to ask people to pay more
than 15 euro). Your name, email address and/or phone number will be required
when you buy your ticket so that you can be notified of any changes or
refunded - if applicable.

The bus departs from Liberty Hall at 9.30am

Fare E15 Return

No seats can be guaranteed without a ticket.

Tickets will be available from 5pm Wednesday 14th at:

Red Ink Books, 4 Upper Fownes St., Dublin 2 (next to the Central Bank
Plaza)
Connelly Books, 7 Bloom Lane, Lower Ormond Qy, Dublin 1 (next to
Millennium Bridge)

It would be a help if you could confirm that you are traveling by
texting, phoning or emailing Laurence 0851544021

The SwP are organising the bus from Cork. There is no IAWM here. Pat O'Sullivan is an SWP member.

Most people going from here will make there own way to Shannon on 24th though there is a lot of cynicism about it being nothing more than an SWP event. I don't think that bus will actually go as nobody is supporting it. The SWP only have about 4 members.
