Argentina is expected to appeal to the US Supreme Court by mid-February in response to a US 2nd Circuit Court ruling ordering the country to pay $1.33 billion to predatory hedge funds. The precedent the case sets will hurt poor countries in financial distress and could allow a small group of hedge funds to target assets that benefit vulnerable populations. read full story / add a comment

Recently returned from a stint in Palestine, the place that most struck me was the city of Hebron. It is here that the illegal settler policies of the Israeli government has led to the most conflict and it is here where I saw some of the worst poverty in the West Bank. read full story / add a comment

Secret deal between City Council and Greyhound Recycling dirty politics
Local election candidate for Pembroke South Dock Wayne Flanagan Tobin has said the secrecy of a deal struck between Dublin City Council and Greyhound recycling demonstrates the need to clean up local government. This is given the amount of dishonesty in local government from planning zonings and’ brown envelope politics’ facilitated by unelected officials hell bent on keeping the public misinformed. This is why as a young person I am standing in the election to clean up local government and make it more transparent. read full story / add a comment

Thought-provoking American lawyer Ellen Brown, author of 12 books, two of them bestsellers on finance, will headline a day-long forum on economic options for Ireland with a presentation at the Springfield Hotel in Leixlip, Co. Kildare on October 12.
The program for the day includes presentations from Jamie Dowling, originator of an internet-based concept called Eirebank, Anthony Migchels, the Dutch promoter of a new interest-free currency, James Devaney, of Leixlip, who will speak on current attempts by government to amalgamate Irish credit unions, and Claire Cullinane, the Cork organizer responsible for helping people facing eviction from their homes.
The Forum will be followed by two additional appearances in Ireland by Brown, author of Web of Debt and The Public Bank Solution. She will speak at the Imperial Hotel, Cork on Oct. 14 (see: here) and again at the Hodson Bay Hotel, Athlone on Oct. 15. (see: here) read full story / add a comment
‘Unity’, the newspaper of the Communist Party of Ireland, on the 24th of August carried a front page article entitled “Facing up to Sectarianism”. The article addressed question of public protests.
Despite the glaringly obvious presence of a current and existing Orange threat, more than half the article, written by Lynda Walker dealt instead with republican parades- and specifically RNUs Henry Joy McCracken commemoration which (as it turned out) was re-routed out of existence the day after the article appeared.
