MAOR (an Irish word for ‘guardian’ or ‘steward’) are a group of individuals based in the North West who came together in 2006 in solidarity with the Shell to Sea campaign and in response to the issues surrounding gas and oil exploration off the Donegal coast.

The upcoming MAOR Energy Forum Fortnight attempts to be a tool to raise awareness of and generate discussion on ownership and management of Ireland’s natural resources.
MAOR encourages everyone to take part in this energising programme of films, workshops, media discussions and a Citizen’s Forum.

All participation in the MAOR Energy Forum Fortnight will be highly valued as MAOR will be compiling all the thoughts shared throughout the events for use in council and government consultation.

Last year, the EU Constitution was defeated in referendums in France and the Netherlands. Europe’s governments quickly got together and rewrote the constitution as an incredibly complicated list of amendments to existing treaties. Together these amendments make up the “Treaty of Lisbon.” Valery Giscard d’Estaing, the president of the Convention on the Future of Europe which did much of the ground work in drafting the constitution, has concluded that “the difference between the original Constitution and the present Lisbon Treaty is one of approach, rather than content”. read full story / add a comment

March 26th sees the first "world document freedom day" celebrated in many states including Ireland to promote & raise awareness for Document Freedom and Open Standards.

Irish support comes from the Dundalk Institute of Technology. DkIT is a proposed site of OOoCon2008 as well. So, if you're into the idea of an open standard which allows you produce, open and alter documents using open source software across platforms then you should go to Dundalk & get a t-shirt. Apparantly they've been sent loads. They may even have umbrellas too. If you're against this, you can always boycott Dundalk and campaign against it hosting the OocCon2008 event. Either way you ought learn a bit more about the campaign. read full story / add a comment

The Ogra colour party lead the parade in Newcastle and Downpatrick and followed the senior colour party in the Castlewellan march. The colour party consisting of activists from Kilcoo, Newcastle and Ballynahinch proudly marched in commemoration of Irelands patriot dead and sought to show to the public that Irelands youth would continue to play a pivotal role in the struggle for re-unification. read full story / add a comment

The I.T Newswire is full of Information on the attendance of Mary Hanafin TD at the INTO Conference.
headlines emerging discuss the secularisation of the Primary School System (only the religious would
put up with the degradation that seems obvious to most parents..) and the ongoing 'reform'of the sector.
I though that our 'Multi-culturalism' was strictly of White-eastern Europeans and bi-lingual Polish community,
given the fight that many Nigerian parents have had to put up to have their kids access health and education
services. Ms Hanafin did not dissapoint, her speech is accessible to download at:-

Over the last few years, blogs and blogging have started to permeate the mainstream in Ireland. Features on bloggers and blogging have started to appear with increasing frequency in weekend newspapers. However, in comparison to the US, where blogs have become an integral part of political organising, blogs are very much still seen as marginal by the Irish political establishment.

Left wing political blogs have until recently been particularly thin on the ground. However, this has started to change, with the emergence of a number of increasingly popular blogs written from an explicitly left-wing point of view. Last month, some of these bloggers came together to establish the Irish Left Review, as an online magazine to help further disseminate left wing views in Ireland. This article presents an interview with Donagh Brennan of dublinopinion.com,one of the founders and current editor of Irish Left Review, about blogging and the origins of this project. read full story / add a comment

I spent the last month Greyhounding around the USA speaking about anarchism in Ireland. Fourteen cities, 20+ meetings in thirty days in cities with populations from thirty thousand to over eight million. On my travels I used the opportunity to record interviews with many of the local anarchists who were organizing the meetings which I edited on the bus and posted to indymedia.ie once I hit my next wi-fi signal. I've collated these interviews below, over two hours of audio in all. read full story / add a comment

Commercial news organisations are already carrying the story that earlier today three "pro-Tibetans" were arrested at Mount Olympus, Greece after attempting to disrupt the beginning of the Olympic Torch route. But most newspapers & TV portals will not highlight the specific group responsible for the action; Reporters Sans Frontiers or RSF members used their press privileges to bypass tight security & wave their banner. By doing so they have endangered press privileges & cast any doubt aside as to the true nature of the supposed "pro-Tibetan" nature of the recent global mobilisation against the Olympiad (first) & Peoples' Republic of China (second). read full story / add a comment

A large number of people took a chance on yesterday's changeable weather to join the annual Good Friday Rossport Solidarity walk. The walk, now in it's fourth year, is along the original route planned by Shell for their production pipeline, which was supposed to carry raw gas at extremely high pressure to the refinery at Bellanaboy.

This route was abandoned by Shell in the face of protests, but not before five local men had to spend three months away from their families locked up in a high security prison in Dublin. Shell keep saying that they will announce the new route for the pipeline "soon", but it seems that they have yet to find an opportune moment. Deliberations ended in January, we are told, but for some reason they are slow to make a formal announcement of their new plan.

Some people are wondering if they are waiting for a certain Dublin politician to announce his resignation, so they can then slip out the announcement while the mainstream media have their hands full... read full story / add a comment
