The morning of 17th April last before he was murdered, 30-year-old Basem Ibrahim Abu-Rahma went to the house of Hamis in the village of Bil'in to dispense his medicine - 3 months previously, Hamis sustained head injuries as a result of being struck by the same type high velocity tear gas bullet that would kill Basem, "then off he went to visit another friend in the village who is ill with cancer. Then a little girl from the village wanted a pineapple but couldn’t find any in the local stores. So Basem went to Ramallah to get a pineapple and was back before noon for the Friday prayers and the weekly demonstration against the theft of our land by the apartheid wall" http://www.bilin-ffj.org/index.php?option=com_content&t...id=30.

I knew Basem: a ray of light, that always lifted my spirits when I met him and now he's dead, murdered. read full story / add a comment

What can we, the plain people of Ireland, contribute to the Theorists, Government politicians, the Bankers, the professions, the economists - to those who have constructed NAMA. These are the people we must learn to trust and if this is so, we the plain people of Ireland must be able to contribute our views, in a collective way, as part of the people grassroots press.

The common sense view is free and this is about democracy. read full story / add a comment

The IPSC have just been informed that this year the Israeli 'independence celebrations' will take place this Tuesday 5th May in Ballsbridge Court Hotel, Shelbourne Road, Ballsbridge, Dublin 4. This event will be nothing other than a celebration of 61 years of ethnic cleansing of the Palestinian people, particularly disgusting in the wake of the slaughter of 1,400 people in Gaza at the beginning of this year. read full story / add a comment

Delara Darabi, who was charged at the age of 17 with murder, was executed today in Rasht. Darabi was 22 years old. Authorities did not inform her lawyer, Abdolsamad Khorramshahi, that her execution was being carried out. According to Iranian law, lawyers must be given 48 hours notice of impending executions. “The execution of Delara Darabi is an affront to human rights values and is in bold violation of Iran’s obligations with respect to international rights standards and covenants,” said Aaron Rhodes, a spokesperson for the Campaign. “What is more, her rights were trampled in an unfair trial.” read full story / add a comment

As is customary in Cork, the evening of May 1 sees trade unionists, workers, socialists of many organizations and cherishers of the Bealtaine traditions march together through the city centre to remember the struggles and sacrifices of the countless millions of working-class people through history and to affirm our continuing commitment to the vision of a better world they bequeathed us. It’s also a time to celebrate and recognise socialist comrades among us who’ve given decades of unwavering commitment to working for positive social change in the world. read full story / add a comment

"EVERY SATURDAY a group of young people, their faces hidden by masks or scarves, gathers outside the office of the Church of Scientology in Abbey Street in Dublin with leaflets and placards making serious allegations about the sect.

If the new law prohibiting publishing or uttering blasphemous matter becomes law, as proposed yesterday by Minister for Justice Dermot Ahern, they could face fines of up to €100,000 and have their homes raided by members of the Garda Síochána in order to seize the offending material." read full story / add a comment

Leaders of the Prison Officers Association (POA) whose annual general meeting is being held in Castlebar , Co Mayo this week have called for a crackdown on the activities of dissident paramilitary prisoners held in Portlaoise Prison .

At a time when the prison service faces an acute shortage of staff and cell space , 48 Continuity IRA, Real IRA and INLA inmates are currently allocated 120 cells at Portlaoise on four landings . Inmates can order in special food like steak to be cooked for them in the jail .

The POA is particularly concerned about subversives holding military parades in the jail and has urged the Minister of Justice to intervene to stop them . But Prison Service boss , Brian Purcell , has rejected the union’s complaint saying that republican prisoners have always been treated differently to ordinary criminals .

The present financial crisis and its destructive consequences for the working class around the world is yet to spread its ominous specter on the everyday life of the Iranian workers; But the injustices they suffer is nothing but the outcome of the rule of the Iranian capitalist class.

Injustices such as: Wages that keep workers under the poverty line, Widespread layoffs, Withholding of workers’ wages for months, Imposition of temporary and blank contracts on workers by companies, Imprisonment and flogging of workers in order to inhibit disobedience and resistance, The absence of fair and legal contracts, are not problems which have emerged in Iran with the new wave of economic crisis. Such injustices have existed in Iran for many years and the crisis is increasingly deepening every year. read full story / add a comment
