Global ethical human rights will give the Lost generation of Youth a future. It really is a macabre understanding of peace and human beings when it is seen that only absolute control to crush potential is the way to achieve peace. In fact, in my view, it creates slaves and dangerous States which are not held to account. read full story / add a comment

A Riot of Our Own: A Symposium on The Clash in Belfast: Call for Papers University of Ulster, Belfast Campus, Northern Ireland June 20-21 2014 In the 1970s, with the Troubles at their height, touring musicians were usually unwilling to play in Northern Ireland. One of the few international acts prepared to break what was in effect the cultural boycott of the region was The Clash. In October 1977, the iconic punk band was scheduled to open the Get Out of Control tour with a concert in the Ulster Hall in Belfast city centre. A few hours before the group was due to take the stage, however, the gig was cancelled for reasons that remain disputed and sparking chaotic scenes that are often recalled as amounting to a ‘riot’. Shortly before Christmas, The Clash made good on their promise to return to Belfast and played a legendary concert in the McMordie Hall at Queen’s University. read full story / add a comment

Some in the U.S. are fearful of speaking out against the wars and social injustice because of the surveillance state.
Since the beginning of the new millennium some people have been guarding their words as if they were in a Communist country. When George W. Bush came into power in 2001 and after the tragedy of September 11th, we became engaged in another war. Mainstream media was almost completely silent on the negatives of a War on Terror. read full story / add a comment

Over the last couple of days we have witnessed massive media hysteria about the case of Maria, a young girl supposedly abducted by a Roma couple in Greece. DNA tests and Lombroso-style racial profiling [1] have come into action in a case that has stirred the irrational anxiety that feeds racism and bigotry. Beyond the fact that child abduction is a serious issue, the "whiteness" and "blondeness" of the alleged victim have been emphasised together with the "Roma" condition of the alleged culprits. Let us remember that this is taking place in Greece, a country where blatant racism (as expressed by Golden Dawn) is on the rise, so there are good reasons to be cautious about this whole case. read full story / add a comment

Whilst James Newton and Sam Clements were filming in Southern Brazil they heard about the extraordinary work of US missionary Sister Dorothy Stang, a nun with a price on her head. For over 20 years she had been fighting to preserve the Amazon rainforest, while helping peasant farmers live sustainably. Inspired by a mere five-minute call to Sister Dorothy, they set off on a 2500-mile journey to find her. Little did they know of the dangers ahead, or that Sister Dorothy would later be killed by hired gunmen. The Student, the Nun & the Amazon is a film about the work of Sister Dorothy made shortly before her death. More info at: www.studentnunamazon.com. read full story / add a comment |
