Yesterday evening pro-Palestine groups staged a protest against the presence of former Israeli Ambassador to the UN Dore Gold and Israeli Embassy delegates at the Clinton Institute in University College Dublin. Gold, who also served as an advisor to Ariel Sharon during the years 2001 – 2003 (years which saw vicious repression of Palestinians during the second intifada, including Operation ‘Defensive Shield’ which killed over 500 people in three weeks), was engaged in an Israeli *hasbara* operation, giving a lecture on the ‘two state solution’ to a small select invite-only audience. One presumes – given that we were not allowed inside - arguing for a Palestinian Bantustan statelet and the primacy of Israeli ‘security concerns’ over the right to Palestinian self-determination. read full story / add a comment

The TUI voted unanimously yesterday to reject the Croke Park pay deal. This morning Mary Coughlan gave a speech at the union's annual conference during which she made no reference to yesterday's vote nor did she take any questions from the floor. When she finished, a union member at the front bobbed up beside her wearing a Sean Fitzpatrick face-mask. Members treated her to total silence both before and after her speech. In contrast Ryan was greeted with constant rounds of applause and standing ovations throughout his speech. read full story / add a comment

Following on from the magnificent Clonmel protest against any attacks on acute services, the west of Ireland showed the depth of anger was not limited to the Tipperary region. On the evening of Tuesday 30th March 2010 the Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign (IPSC) in Dublin commemorated Palestinian Land Day by holding a solidarity picket outside the GPO on O'Connell Street from 5 - 7pm, during which hundreds of leaflets were distributed. The picket was attended by over thirty members and supporters of the IPSC, in a colourful and lively display of solidarity which brought a certain vivaciousness to O'Connell Street on such a dismal evening. read full story / add a comment
