Remember the 3rd of September. That is the day the economic conservative consensus died, when all the certainties propagated by our one-party state were shredded. Fiona Fail has panicked in the face of rapid economic deterioration, brought forward the budget by a few weeks, and in that simple, technical act has unintentionally composed a dirge. No one day heralds the end of something as complex and layered as an economic cycle. But they can serve up symbols. September 3rd is such a symbol – of a coffin, and the Ministers polishing it. read full story / add a comment ![]()

A Danish military intelligence whistleblower has complained that the Danish prison service has been unfair in imprisoning him at a distance from his 15-year-old daughter. Frank Grevil has been imprisoned at Horserød Prison since June this year, as punishment for leaking documents which showed that the Danish Defence Intelligence Service did not share the government's conviction that Saddam Hussein's Iraq was in possession of weapons of mass destruction at the time of Denmark's invasion of Iraq in March 2003. read full story / add a comment ![]()

Shell’s contracted pipe-laying ship the Solitaire and its support vessels were informed today of S2S’ intent to resist its operations in Broadhaven Bay. The Solitaire was technically boarded for a short time by S2S activists, the Irish tricolour unfurled aboard it, and letters of request and intent were delivered to the captains of the Solitaire and its supply vessels, as well as to the harbourmaster at Killybegs docks. The letters’ contents requested the Solitaire and its associated vessels to cease preparations for the pipe-laying operation in Broadhaven Bay, and to cease participation in the unsafe, unwanted and illegal Corrib Gas project. The letter delivered to the harbourmaster requested that he stop providing services to Shell’s contracted vessels in his port. read full story / add a comment ![]()

Members of TaraWatch and other groups will sell pieces of coal , dressed as 'fat- cats', tomorrow outside the Green party offices on Suffolk Street at noon tomorrow. The coal will signify the Green's preference for creating new taxes, to penalise carbon use, instead of seeking cuts in spending on carbon producing infrastructure like tolled motorways, in the upcoming Budget, like their own policy documents call for. read full story / add a comment ![]()

Raked over in newspapers since the fifth and final series made its way on to TnaG, it's hard to write anything new about the Wire. It's a portrait of America through Baltimore and the cop show vehicle; of failing school systems and crumbling communities, where drugs gangs and cops act in similar flurries of selfish brutality. read full story / add a comment ![]()

The Shell to Sea Flotilla took to the waves in Broadhaven Bay this evening towards sunset in an attempt to foil winching preparations in advance of the pipe-laying ship the Solitaire’s arrival possibly sometime soon. The intrepid S2S Flotilla were opposed in their mission by Shell’s fleet of security mercenaries, Gardaí, and the Irish Naval service, which were deployed in overwhelming numbers and in an aggressive, deliberately un-safety-conscious manner. Seven S2S marine protestors were arrested and taken to Belmullet Garda station. In a simultaneous action at the gates of the Shell Glengad compound a local man was arrested and taken to Belmullet Garda station. An earlier marine S2S sortie successfully held up shore-based dredging operations in the Glengad compound this afternoon for about two hours; there were no arrests that time. read full story / add a comment |
