éirígí say NO to Lisbon Treaty

While European Union heads of state were gathering in Lisbon today, to sign away the sovereignty of their respective states, the removal vans were arriving in Dublin to cart off the last vestiges of the Twenty Six County state’s independence.

In a bold visual display éirigí launched its ‘NO TO LISBON’ campaign outside Leinster House today. The centrepiece of the launch was a mock-up ‘EU NO_TO_LISBON Removals’ van sporting the slogan ‘Experts in the Removal of Independence, Democracy & Neutrality’. The vehicle pulled up outside Leinster House to highlight the fact that ratification of the Lisbon Treaty will mean the end of the already limited form of national democracy within all EU states. read full story / add a comment

If Katy French had grown up in Finglas or Ballyfermot or Clondakin or Lucan or someother place that the politicians in the Dail and establishment who live in leafy afluent parts of South Dublin do not know exist and was working in a supermarket when she died from using cocaine her death would have been mentioned in a tiny paragraph in the newspapers and would not resurface until months later the coroner would rule the fatalily was the result of death through misadventure. If Katy French had not died this past week the deaths and hospitalisation of a number of young men in Waterford and in the Midlands from drug use would hardly have earned a mention in the mainstream broadsheets.

Something quite extraordinary has happened in Argentina. & to appreciate it, all you really have to do is wonder how many spouses see each other serve in the highest office of their land. Hilary obviously pops to mind, but the you get the absolutely extraordinary nature of the new Argentinian presidency - for not only is it legitimatised by one of the highest electoral margins in democratic history - there was no need for two terms of a Bush type (or to be completely up-to-oligarchy style) the son or daughter of a rival.

Yep - admit it you political experts & know-alls are hard put to remember any other state where a president has served his constitutional limitations then handed the sash & baton to his wife. Or indeed the other way round. read full story / add a comment

Over the weekend of November 24-25, protesters clashed with police in Sucre, Bolivia - they were demanding that the capital of the country be moved to Sucre. Three people died and over some 100 were wounded in the clashes. Yesterday Morales announced plans for a nationwide referendum to resolve a deepening political crisis in the country. A few months ago, two recent works on Bolivia were given a look over for the WSM's Red and Black Revolution 14. The review now appears on line for the first time.
