It is my assertion that the current government of the Irish Republic is attempting to initiate changes that will negatively impact the welfare of the people of Ireland. An Taoiseach, Enda Kenny T.D. is seeking to circumvent the initiation of a referendum by seeking to have a ruling from the Attorney General which will deny the people of Ireland our constitutional right to self determination which is also a principle of international law. I am hereby petitioning you with respect in your capacity as Uachtarán na hÉireann to invoke your powers under Article 27.5.1 to call a referendum on the ESM Treaty, a proposal I believe is of such national importance that the will of the people should be accordingly ascertained. Article 15.4.1° The Oireachtas shall not enact any law which is in any respect repugnant to this Constitution or any provision thereof. read full story / add a comment

Shell today began to cut down a Coillte plantation in the village of Leenamore, Co. Mayo. This surprise move marks the beginning of their attempts to prepare the 4km stretch of land between the Aughoose tunnelling compound and the Bellanaboy refinery. Despite a large Garda and private security presence, campaigners entered the tree felling area and halted work. read full story / add a comment

There were angry scenes both outside and inside City Hall this afternoon as councillors gathered to formally endorse the draft budget for 2012. A large number of protestors had gathered outside City Hall from about 3pm in order to meet councillors as they entered the building. read full story / add a comment

Twenty five peace activists were again far outnumbered by security forces at Shannon airport at the January peace vigil.
Inside the airport three OMNI Air Troop carriers were under army and garda protection, at taxpayers expense. Garda and army personnel were not complaining of course, with their Garda overtime and army security allowances. The taxpayer may wish to question however, why Ireland is incurring such expenditure, in addition to waving many of the air navigation fees due to US military traffic over and through Ireland. This military air traffic is also breaching Irish neutrality on a daily basis. read full story / add a comment

HORSE RACING DEATH TOLL PROMPTS CALL FOR A BAN .
Five young horses died last week at Leopardstown Race Track whilst Racing. This follows a similar incident where six horses died at Tramore track in Killarney a few years ago.
In Sligo two years ago a horse collision at Cullenamore Races resulted in a horse having to be put down and two jockeys rushed to hospital. The collision occurred in front of hundreds of spectators. Laytown is remembered for the pile up of horses in the nineties when three horses were killed.
While these fatalities are described as ‘freakish’ ‘sad’ and ‘regrettable’ the number of injuries and deaths is rising because horses are raced and made jump. read full story / add a comment

Got this from LabourStart yesterday. This is very disturbing and sinister, and it's not happening in some remote, tin-pot, 3rd World dictatorship!! This is happening in Europe! In Greece, a European Union (EU) Member. And what are the EU, who are so quick to blabber and bleat on about human right's abuses in Libya, Iran, Syria, and other places safely removed from Europe, doing and saying about this? Surprise! Surprise! Nothing, as it's the EU and their austerity policies that have led to this, and it wouldn't surprise me at all if the EU is orchestrating this behind the scenes as an attempt to smash Protests by the People and the Workers against their failed austerity policies. read full story / add a comment

Very interesting discussion on Today PK (RTE Radio One) of how media misinformation, most of which originated during the 1981 H Block hunger strikes resurfaced during the release of state papers in 2012.
Allegations that:
- Bobby Sands told the Pope's representative that he would come off the hunger strike;
- that Raymond McCreesh's family forced him to remain on hunger strike;
- that the British agreed the substance of the prisoner's demands between the death of the fourth and fifth hunger striker;
are discussed, by journalist Eamon Mallie, historian Eamon Phoenix and 1981 prisoners' spokesperson Danny Morrison. read full story / add a comment

Yesterday saw the first disruption of Shell's work of the New Year with a quickly organised protest called for 10am outside Bellanaboy. Overall Shell's work yesterday was stopped for 2 hours and in a further protest today (Saturday), work was stopped for a further 2 & 1/2 hours. read full story / add a comment

Aisling Byrne writes about the US plans for regime change in Syria. Byrne is not a lackey of the Syrian regime, in this article she is critical of it and how it has handled the crisis. She worked in Syria and saw the Secret Police in action. But she says: what may have began as popular protests, initially focused on local issues and incidents (including the case of the torture of young boys in Dera'a by security forces) were rapidly hijacked by this wider strategic project for regime change. "War with Iran is already here," wrote a leading Israeli commentator recently, describing "the combination of covert warfare and international pressure" being applied to Iran. Although not mentioned, the "strategic prize" of the first stage of this war on Iran is Syria; the first campaign in a much wider sectarian power-bid. "Other than the collapse of the Islamic Republic itself," Saudi King Abdullah was reported to have said last summer, "nothing would weaken Iran more than losing Syria." European Union’s (EU) in-principle decision on Wednesday to impose an embargo on oil imports from Iran has further escalated the danger of military conflict in the Persian Gulf. I'm shocked but not surprised to see yet another stealth tax by the Government this time on 115000 Pensioners who have their own as well as the State Pension. Many of them are now going to be up to €4400 per year for a single person or €8800 per year for a couple worse off because they'll now be paying tax on their Pensions which they worked hard for all their lives. Why don't the Revenue Commissioners go after all the big tax evaders instead of vulnerable and soft targets like the Pensioners? Not that the Pensioners will be a pushover as they showed a few years ago when they resisted the Government's attack on their Medical Cards. read full story / add a comment |
