An Spréach, meaning The Spark, is a small housing action group formed due to the housing crisis in Dublin and beyond. We aim to use and develop tactics to highlight the appalling housing situation faced by many ordinary people throughout Ireland. We seek, through the use of direct action, to liberate vacant housing as a campaigning method and as a means of providing accommodation for those in need. read full story / add a comment

In reaction to an adverse Supreme Court ruling against Argentina, President Cristina Fernández de Kirchner announced that Argentina would offer new bonds to its creditors governed under Argentine law. The proposed debt swap would involve the 92% of the country's creditors that agreed to restructure in the wake of the country's 2001 default. While the debt swap proposes an alternative for the South American country to avoid paying hold-outs, it fails to reverse the global implications on debt markets, debt restructuring and financial stability. read full story / add a comment

Supreme Court Refuses Argentina Debt Case and Validates Hedge Fund Predatory Behavior. The US Supreme Court denied Argentina's appeal for a hearing today, leaving intact a lower court ruling that validates predatory behavior targeted towards countries in financial distress. The high court also denied a related appeal on behalf of the more than 92% of bond holders who had accepted Argentina's restructuring deal. In a final blow, the court also decided that hedge funds can access information on where Argentina holds financial assets around the world. The International Monetary Fund (IMF), legitimate Wall Street investors and the US government had sided with Argentina because of the case's impact on debt restructuring, poor country access to credit and global financial stability. read full story / add a comment

Last week on June 8th volunteer Seamus McLaughlin died in his adopted city of Dublin. Seamus was born in Ardoyne on February 22nd 1938. ", At an early age Seamus joined the ranks of the IRA and soon became OC of his local unit. England's difficulty, Ireland’s opportunity had always been the rallying cry of Irish Republicans and this young soldier of the l.R.A took Ireland's fight for freedom to the 'belly of the beast' in England, where he and his family endured many hardships including the loss of close comrades. Forced to live for decades on the run and his love for his family, community and country never wavered.

(An article on the protest in Brazil against the World Cup, aswell as a small campaign in the southern most host city, Curitiba, about the #CheerForPeace project which is working with communities in the cities most central favela Vila Torres)

The eyes of the world focus on Brazil

Today the 2014 FIFA World Cup begins in Brazil, who knows how it will go. Will it be a success, or not? Will they have the stadiums finished in time, or not? Will it be interrupted by violent protests, or not? Will it be a positive thing for the country, or not?

We already have, what has quick become, an iconic image of where much of the feelings in Brazil rest at present. Brazilian artist Paulo Ito posted this mural on the doors of a schoolhouse in São Paulo’s Pompeia a few weeks ago.

Are the Direct Provision Asylum Seeker centres our generations equivalent of the child detention centres of the 1930's? Some 4,360 people were stuck in this misery at the start of the year. Over 1,600 of these people have been trapped in the system for 5 or more years. Meanwhile those running the centres who are frequently connected to the ruling parties pocketed €62 million in 2012 alone. read full story / add a comment

If you are feeling strong this morning Rabble published a must read article yesterday on the 796 dead children found in a mass grave at the St.Mary’s Mother and Baby Home, Tuam. That's not a misprint, for the 40 years this institution operated at least one child died a fortnight, a death rate that approached 10% of those in the home per year! They ranged from 2 days (Thomas Duffy) to 9 years (Sheila Tuohy) old. read full story / add a comment

*Now or never!*

*Everyone come to Calais !!!!*

The authorities have decided to destroy the three main camps, which shelter around 700 people. The only prospect for the inhabitants: a pill against scabies and life in the street! There can be no question of repeating the events of 2009, when the eviction of the Afghan jungle resulted in the arrest of hundreds of migrants, their detainment all over France and attempts to deport them to Afghanistan. There can be no question, after five years of persecution, of starting all over again from zero, while the machine of repression gears up once more. Never again! read full story / add a comment

The Herald contains a bizarre full page whinge from the owner of the Paris Bakery about how the publicity their failure to pay their workers received has 'destroyed my life.' It's heartening as the occupation enters its 6th day to see that both Yannick Forel and Ruth Savill have come under enough pressure from the workers to feel the need to make public statements. But they need to meet with the workers and make arrangements to pay the estimated 130,000 in wages owed. read full story / add a comment

Labour Party spokespeople after the enormous rejection their policies received in the elections have been trying to spin this as being down to some flaw in leadership. The implication being that there was no real problem with their role in imposing savage cuts on workers and marginalised people. No, instead we are to believe it was all a problem of the current Labour leaders not being skilful enough at 'selling' these cuts to the electorate. read full story / add a comment

Wednesday 21st saw another successful defence against an eviction in Dublin. This time in the Stoneybatter area. We put out an alert after we were told that a gang of 3 men with crowbars "came this afternoon and broke in to one of the houses. About 40-50 people showed up outside to show support, then 5 Garda showed up. People inside resisted and argued until the alleged owners and Garda left the house and left the street to a large round of applause. read full story / add a comment

Members of Chelsea (formerly Bradley) Manning's family made a second trip from Wales to Dublin last week, to report back on February's visit to Chelsea in Fort Leavenworth, to catch up with friends made last November in Ireland and this January at the Manning Truthfest in Pembrokeshire, and to see a bit of Dublin. The family's visit to Chelsea in February was paid for with donations made to the Private Manning Family Fund, the first time in nearly four years that the family had received any financial support with prison visits. read full story / add a comment
